Ilchester

Ilchester is a town in Somerset , England , with a population of just over 2000.

history

Ilchester has a large number of finds of a Roman settlement that can be equated with Lindinis . In the 12th and 13th centuries, Ilchester was a rural center with Somerset market privilege. A Dominican monastery was founded here in the 13th century , which was dissolved in 1538 and demolished in the 19th century. An Augustinian monastery was also built in the 13th century and existed until 1463. The church of St. Mary Major , which still exists today, also dates from the 13th century and, like St. Andrews , is a listed building. Roger Bacon was reportedly born in the Ilchester area.

The city, which received a seat of parliament in 1621, has lost a lot of its importance since the 18th century. In 1832 the parliamentary seat of the Rotten Borough was abolished, in 1833 the last market took place.

Wölbacker in Sock Dennis

The district of Sock Dennis belonging to Ilchester was entered in the Domesday Book as the property of Count Robert von Mortain . This district is almost completely depopulated today. Here you can find well-preserved traces of Wölbackers , which were created by the plowing system with fixed plowshares , which was used from Roman times to the early Middle Ages , which only knocked over the clod to one side (“raking”).

Richard of Ilchester was probably born in Sock Dennis .

economy

The region is characterized by agricultural activities. In 1962 the Ilchester Cheese Company was founded as a subsidiary of the Norwegian Norseland , which belongs to the Tina SA group. A specialty is the production of cheese, which is flavored or smoked with beer, fruit and spices.
