Sarah Louise Palin [ ˈsæɹə luːˈiːz ˈpʰeɪ̯lɪn ] (born Heath ; born February 11, 1964 in Sandpoint , Idaho ) is an American politician . She is a member of the Republican Party . Palin was Governor of the US state Alaska from December 2006 to July 2009, making it the first woman in this office. In the 2008 presidential election she was appointed by Republican candidate John McCain as a candidate for the vice presidency at his side. After her resignation as governor, she worked as a political commentator a. a. worked for Fox News and an activist in the tea party movement .

Family and private

Palin's family during the announcement of the candidacy for vice-president

The family moved from Idaho to Skagway , Alaska in 1964 when their parents took up teaching and school secretary positions there. In 1982, Palin graduated from Wasilla High School , where she was nicknamed "Sarah Barracuda" as a basketball player . During her school days she headed the Christian Association of Young Athletes. In 1984 she took part in the beauty contests for Miss Alaska in part, finishing in third place.

Palin attended four universities or colleges from 1982 to 1987 (Hawaii Pacific College, North Idaho Community College , University of Idaho , Matanuska-Susitna Community College) and finally obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in communication and journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987 . She then lived in Skagway , Eagle River and Wasilla .

She married Todd Palin, a North Slope entrepreneur who won the Tesoro Iron Dog , the world's longest snowmobile race , four times . The marriage has five children; the youngest was born in the spring of 2008 with Down's syndrome , the second oldest - the then 18-year-old daughter - she made a grandmother on December 28, 2008. Contrary to the announcement in the US election campaign in 2008 that she would get married after finishing school, the daughter separated from the father of the child two months after the birth. There were disputes with the child's father about custody and maintenance of Palin's grandchild.

In 2007, a car wash , which she and her husband owned 40 percent of the time, was closed by the state of Alaska (notice of involuntary liquidation) after the state of Alaska had unsuccessfully issued a dunning letter for the mandatory two-year annual report and the fees for it. The fees to the authorities were more than a year overdue.

On the ranking lists published by Google for 2008, the word combination “Sarah Palin” was number 1 on the pages with the greatest increases in search term queries. In terms of the rate of increase within this year, it was clearly ahead of Barack Obama .

Palin calls himself a hockey mom . Until 2002 she was a practicing Pentecostal . She lives with her family in Wasilla, about 40 miles north of Anchorage .

In 2019, her husband filed for divorce because of "different temperaments".

Political rise

Location Wasillas in Alaska

Registered with the Republican Party since she was of legal age, Palin was first elected to the city council of her hometown Wasilla in 1992. In 1996 she became mayor of the small town and held the office until 2002. In the mayoral election campaign, she mainly took positions against gun control and abortion, thus securing support from national lobby groups. These topics were very unusual for the local election campaigns, which were otherwise conducted in a neighborhood .

As mayor, she pursued a very business-friendly policy. Companies only levied low taxes, only few conditions were imposed when settling in Wasilla and cheap building land was made available for companies. As a result, significantly more building land was designated in Palin's two terms in office and there was an increase in the settlement of shopping centers and larger companies. The population of Wasillas increased by about a quarter. However, this also resulted in increasing environmental pollution. For example, Lake Lucille near Wasilla has increased concentrations of phosphates .

Palin campaigned to cut her mayor's salary. She actually cut her salary from January 1, 1997, from $ 68,000 to $ 61,200, and then increased it to $ 68,000 on January 6, 1998. At the beginning of 1999 there was another cut to $ 66,000, followed by a further increase to $ 68,000 at the beginning of her second term.

In 2002 she was narrowly defeated by her party colleague Loren Leman in the Republican primary for lieutenant governor . From 2003 to 2004 she sat on the board of directors for the commissioner's office for oil and gas in Alaska. She resigned from this post in protest of the misconduct of some Republican party comrades (including work for the party at state expense and the disclosure of confidential documents from the Oil and Gas Commission to lobbyists).

Alaska Governor

politics

In August 2006, she won the Republican primary for governor, beating incumbent Frank Murkowski by 51 percent to 19 percent (a third candidate, John Binkley, got 30 percent). On November 7, 2006, she was elected the youngest and first female governor of Alaska with 48 percent, against her challengers Tony Knowles with 41 percent and Andrew Halcro with nine percent, and sworn in on December 4, 2006. Her political work focused on resource development, education, the labor market, health care, public safety, as well as transportation and infrastructure . Under her leadership, Alaska invested $ 5 billion in government funds such as the Alaska Permanent Fund , reworked education funding from the ground up, and introduced senior benefits programs for lower-income seniors . She also created the Alaska Petroleum Systems Integrity Office to monitor the supply of oil and gas equipment, facilities, and infrastructure. They also had a committee on the impact of climate change (Climate Change Subcabinet) set up to prepare and implement a strategy of Alaska against the global warming .

During her tenure, laws were passed that spurred the planning of a gas pipeline to transport natural gas from Alaska through Canada to the metropolitan US. In addition, the state ethics laws have been revised. Palin also chaired the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission , an agency in which most states are involved and which is supposed to promote the conservation and the environmentally sound and healthy recovery of US oil and natural gas reserves. She also served as vice chair of the National Governors Association Natural Resources Committee .

On July 26, 2009, she resigned from her position as governor and handed over the duties of office to Sean Parnell . The resignation was seen by analysts as a step towards a higher post in federal politics. In her farewell speech, she said that she was ready to stand up for the interests of the Americans and the truth. At the time, 40% of Americans rated it positive and 53% negative.

Allegations of the manner in which he held office

She was under investigation in Alaska for abuse of office because the Alaska State Police Chief, who she dismissed in July 2008, said he had been pressured repeatedly by those around Palin to remove a certain officer from the service. The latter is the ex-husband of Palin's sister, who is involved in a divorce and custody dispute with her. The reason for the release request was that he lacked the character traits required to be a police officer because he had injured his 11-year-old stepson with a stun gun at his request, illegally hunted a moose, drank beer in a police car and threatened his death Father-in-law kicked out in case he found a divorce lawyer for his daughter. A few days after the allegation became known, the Alaskan Parliament launched an official investigation into the case. Attempts by Republican MPs to stop the investigation were dismissed on October 9, 2008 by the Alaska State Supreme Court. The MPs argued that the investigation was motivated by party politics. The court ruled that, on the one hand, the investigation had already begun before the nomination for the vice-presidency and, on the other hand, it was legitimate for parliament to investigate the background to the dismissal of a state official.

On October 11, 2008, the report of the parliamentary investigation committee was published, which found that the Republican vice-presidential candidate Palin had abused her power as governor in the dismissal of the senior official Walt Monegan. Family disputes did not only play a role, but they were a factor. The dismissal was legal, but Palin allowed himself to be influenced by the private dispute, which according to investigator Stephen Branchflower, a former prosecutor, violates Alaska's ethics for government officials. The committee's report was followed by an investigation by the State Personnel Department of the State of Alaska. In Alaska, this administrative authority is responsible for deciding on any legal consequences for the governor should he have abused his power. On October 24, 2008, the Palins testified in front of the management. Immediately before the presidential election on November 4, 2008, the Personnel Commission published the results of its investigations. The Personnel Committee found that the Committee of Inquiry had compiled the facts correctly. Nevertheless, in the opinion of the Personnel Commission, Palin did not violate Alaska's ethical principles. The parliamentary committee applied the principles incorrectly. The ethical principles should prevent personal enrichment, this would not exist.

In addition, according to research by the New York Times, allegations are made that Palin had given a managerial position in the Alaska Department of Agriculture to a school friend. As a qualification for the job, which has an above-average annual salary of 95,000 US dollars, schoolmate Franci Havemeister stated, among other things, her “love for cows as a child”. Similar processes were found in four other school friends. In addition, according to research by the New York Times, she was hardly to be found at her seat among politicians in Alaska in the second year of her term in office.

Investigations by a special investigator into the possible illegal taking of their children on business trips resulted in an agreement in February 2009 that Palin would repay $ 7,000 to the State of Alaska. Of the 72 trips examined, nine were classified as doubtful by investigator Timothy Petumenos. The rest were business trips. Nonetheless, there was basically no wrongdoing by Palin, and Alaska was only not obliged to pay for family members to be taken along in dubious cases.

Candidate for Vice Presidency 2008

Sarah Palin ran unsuccessfully in the 2008 presidential election at John McCain's side for the United States' vice presidency. She would have been the first woman to hold this office, but was not the first candidate: Marietta Stow ran for Vice President as early as 1884 ; In 1984, Geraldine Ferraro, a candidate from the Democrats, was the first woman to run for the vice-presidency on the platform of one of the major parties.

Palin's nomination was first made publicly at a campaign event in Dayton, Ohio . Palin was not McCain's first choice: His favorite Joe Lieberman , Senator from Connecticut and in the presidential election of 2000, still running mate of Democrat Al Gore , had been blocked by the conservative wing of the Republicans. However, she had already prepared her nomination in September 2007 by inviting influential conservative media representatives to Alaska and hosting them. This advertised her as a vice-presidential candidate.

According to analysts, Palin's nomination was intended to attract supporters of the defeated presidential candidate Hillary Clinton , especially white women, to McCain's camp, but also to mobilize the religiously oriented conservative party base of the Republicans.

It turned out that the evangelical circles reacted rather dividedly to the candidacy of Palin and that her candidacy met with aversion among women. Moderate Republicans such as Colin Powell eventually moved to Obama's camp because of the Palin decision ; In the course of the election campaign, her candidacy met with increasing rejection among neoconservative intellectuals. On the other hand, conservative Republicans saw Palin in a leading position in the party regardless of the outcome of the election. If McCain lost the election, a presidential candidacy for 2012 was partially considered. Shortly before the election, polls by the New York Times and the broadcaster CBS found that 59% of those questioned were more likely to reject Palin because she was too inexperienced.

A few days after the nomination, the pregnancy of Palin's 17-year-old unmarried daughter became known. This was brought up in public because of Palin's political positions on sex education .

Sarah Palin speaking at the Republican Nomination Congress (2008)

In a speech directed against the Democratic candidates at the nomination party conference, she enthused her party's supporters. The speech had high ratings in the United States with 37.2 million viewers. The Democratic vice-presidential candidate Joe Biden , on the other hand, had only 24 million viewers with his speech on August 27, 2008. In the wake of the party congress and Palin's speech, polls showed McCain's lead over Obama for the first time, which was attributed to Palin's nomination. Only with the worsening of the financial crisis as a result of the collapse of the Lehman Brothers bank did the lead created by Sarah Palin's nomination end.

Palin's campaigning demeanor and clothing style, especially the glasses she wore, influenced fashion in the United States. The clothing later sparked a debate in the United States when it was revealed that the Republicans had funded $ 150,000 in clothing, makeup, and hairstyle. The image consultant thought this was necessary in order to strip off the look of a provincial woman and instead flaunt a cosmopolitan look . Republican campaign donors and supporters of the party criticized this use of campaign funds.

In order to demonstratively compensate for her inexperience in foreign policy, which she is increasingly being accused of, she first met the former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger on September 23, 2008 . Subsequently, on the same day, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly , she met with the head of state of Colombia , Álvaro Uribe , the head of state of Afghanistan , Hamid Karzai , and on September 24th also with the president of Georgia , Mikheil Saakashvili , the president of Ukraine , Viktor Yushchenko , the President of Iraq , Jalal Talabani , and the Heads of State of Pakistan and India , Asif Ali Zardari and Manmohan Singh . These meetings were organized with a view to the September 11 interview (see below) in which Sarah Palin admitted that she had never met a foreign head of state in person. The meetings should initially take place in the absence of the press. Only after considerable protests, especially by CNN , was the press given a little insight.

On September 11, 2008, Sarah Palin gave the ABC journalist Charles Gibson her first independent interview since the candidacy began. Otherwise, she has not given any press conferences since the nomination at the party congress. Critics accused her of deliberately avoiding journalists in order to cover up a lack of knowledge of foreign policy. In a total of three interviews between the nomination party conference and the television duel with Joe Biden on October 2, 2008, she revealed blatant ignorance of economic and foreign policy issues. She also expressed beliefs contrary to McCain's stated policies. In particular, an interview that Palin gave to CBS journalist Katie Couric was considered a failed performance. Among other things , when asked how much she knew about Russia , Palin simply replied that on a clear day you could see Russia from Alaska. Palin herself stated in her book "Going Rogue" published in 2009 as the reason for this, that Couric was biased and her statements were therefore shortened to short information snippets.

In the television debate with Joe Biden, according to a poll after the debate, 84% of viewers believed that she was less embarrassed than had previously been expected; her camp rated this a success. Even so, according to the poll, she was only 36% more convincing than Biden, who was considered the winner of the duel by 51%. The duel was seen by over 70 million viewers , according to research by Nielsen Media Research , while the first Obama-McCain debate was watched by just 52 million viewers.

When the Republican candidate's polls fell, Palin accused Barack Obama of personal contact with Bill Ayers , a former leader of the Weathermen , a terrorist group in the 1960s and 1970s. This was seen as part of a campaign strategy change Palin was seeking to achieve less personal consideration. From the democratic side it was viewed as a diversionary maneuver. This change in strategy, however, led the moderate voters to orient themselves more towards Obama. As part of the tougher line, Palin took the position in several speeches that Obama tended to " socialist " experiments and was not up to the demands of foreign policy.

Sarah Palin and John McCain lost significantly in the presidential election on November 4, 2008 against the Democratic duo Barack Obama and Joe Biden. According to Palin's view, published in her 2009 autobiography, the main cause of the defeat was the poor preparation of the campaign by McCain's campaign team. This view was outraged by members of the campaign team.

After running for vice presidency

Sarah Palin's home on Lake Lucille .

After the campaign, Sarah Palin said in an interview with Larry King that she saw Obama's election as a historic moment, was proud of him and prayed for him and his government. She did not rule out a presidential candidacy in 2012. At the Conservative Political Action Conference , Sarah Palin and Ron Paul were elected third among the possible 2012 Republican presidential candidates with 13% of the votes cast. Mitt Romney (20%) and Bobby Jindal (14%) did better . In contrast, an opinion poll conducted by CNN at the end of February 2009 showed that 29% of Republican voters would support Palin's 2012 presidential candidacy. So she did best in the survey. In a poll of conservative religious voters in September 2009, however, it fell behind Mike Huckabee (28%) with 12%. By resigning as governor, Republican campaign strategists believe that she has acquired the image of a “slacker”. Palin's running for the 2012 presidential election could therefore end in a debacle. However, even after resigning from the governorship in spring 2010, 37% of Americans showed clear sympathy for Sarah Palin in surveys, even if 50% rejected her and 71% considered her unqualified for the office of US president.

On February 4, 2010, Sarah Palin was the keynote speaker at the Tea Party Convention . The tea party movement is considered a right-wing conservative movement with a wide impact. On February 7, 2010, she said in an interview that she could envisage running for president in 2012. She is seen as the leading figure of this movement and thus influential in the selection of conservative candidates and thus poses a problem for more moderate representatives of the Republican Party. Nonetheless, she supported John McCain in his re-election to the United States Senate for Arizona 2010, although McCain faced the more conservative JD Hayworth . Hayworth assessed the performance as a thank you to McCain, who had made her famous with her running for the vice presidency. In total, she supported 30 candidates in the 2010 Republican Primaries , 20 of which were able to prevail in the party primaries. In addition to McCain, among others, Carly Fiorina in California , Rand Paul in Kentucky and the outsider Joe Miller in Alaska against Senator Lisa Murkowski .

Sarah Palin also spoke at a large-scale demonstration of the Tea Party movement organized by moderator Glenn Beck on August 28, 2010 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC . Among other things, she called for the honor of the United States and the United States to be restored rather than changed. An appearance by Palin at a Ronald Reagan Republican Party dinner in Iowa was sometimes seen as the first step towards the 2012 presidential candidacy. Speaking in Des Moines , she called for unity of the Republican Party in the congressional elections.

After the assassination attempt on Gabrielle Giffords , Palin's rhetoric entered the discussion. Critics accused her that her aggressive campaigns poisoned public opinion and led to the attack. Supporters of her see the assassin as a disturbed lone perpetrator with whom Palin has nothing to do. Palin herself said she was against violence. In a video message distributed on Facebook , she expressed her condolences to the bereaved, but also attacked her critics and accused them of bringing a " Blood Libel " against them. Since the term “blood charge” refers to anti-Semitic allegations, she was accused of lacking sensitivity. An opinion poll conducted from January 14th to 16th, 2011 showed that 56% have a negative opinion of her, 38% have a positive opinion. The number of those who reject Palin has grown by seven percentage points since October, while those of supporters have shrunk by two percentage points. Opposition had increased particularly among women and among independent voters. This was attributed to Palin's aggressive behavior when asked whether her campaign was a cause of the Giffords attack.

In early October 2011, Palin announced that she would not run for president in 2012 and cited personal reasons. Previously, her approval ratings had dropped sharply and she was well behind her party colleagues Mitt Romney , Rick Perry and Herman Cain .

2016 presidential election

Sarah Palin with Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Iowa.

During his candidacy for the Republican candidate in the 2016 presidential election , Donald Trump announced in September 2015 that he would like someone like Palin in his cabinet. Palin said on CNN that she could hold the energy department under Trump. Energy is "her baby", but she would abolish the ministry immediately.

In January 2016 in Ames, Iowa , Sarah Palin announced her support for Donald Trump as a candidate for the Republican candidacy in the 2016 presidential election. Trump then called her support an "honor" in an interview. Palin's statement could have used his candidacy in the first Iowa primary . While he led nationwide polls against Ted Cruz , he was tied in Iowa. Iowa's Republicans tend to prefer the evangelical line represented by Palin or Cruz. She appeared only once at a campaign event as a supporter of Donald Trump. After Trump won the election, she said that God intervened in the election to let Trump win.

After the end of the election campaign, Palin closed her PAC on December 31, 2016 , which was interpreted as a renunciation of any further political career. In October 2018, she indicated a possible candidacy against Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski for 2022.

Media career

Sarah Palin already received greater media attention during the McCain election campaign. The representation of Palin in the media followed a traditional image of women by emphasizing their participation in miss elections, their external appearance and their role as mother.

During the presidential election campaign, the Palin parodies on the comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL), for which Tina Fey , a former SNL ensemble member, was hired because of her physical resemblance to Palin, attracted a lot of attention . The show achieved its best ratings for years thanks to these skits, and according to a Reuters report, Fey's portrayal of Palin received almost as much public attention as Palin herself, who eventually appeared in person on an episode of the show. Fey's parody was awarded an Emmy in 2009 .

Together with Lynn Vincent , she wrote her autobiography , Going Rogue: An American Life , which was published in November 2009 by HarperCollins . Sarah Palin earned more on the book on an advance of $ 1.25 million than on her wages as a politician. The first edition of 1.5 million copies was already sold out due to pre-orders before it was published. The book climbed to the top of the bestseller lists even before it was published in the United States . In the book, Palin describes the 2008 election campaign from her point of view. In her opinion, the Republican election campaign team has only been extremely inadequately prepared for it. Katie Couric , who she gave an interview during the election campaign, was biased in asking the question. In the opinion of Beat Ammann, going rogue is largely an account of Palin, which is, however, well-written. The book contained no further political program apart from a recourse to the leitmotif of Ronald Reagan's policy with regard to the market economy and tax cuts. According to the publisher, the autobiography had sold 2.2 million times by spring 2010. Another book by Palin was published by Harper in 2010, entitled America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag .

From January 2010 to January 2013, Palin was a commentator on Fox News. The first appearance for FOX took place in January 2010 as part of the O'Reilly show . On June 13, 2013, Palin was back at Fox as an analyst.

From the end of March 2010 she presented her point of view on the TV show "Real American Stories". In the show, wealthy wealthy people, military heroes and parents who look after their disabled children were portrayed as the "real America". The show came under fire shortly after it first aired because of the re-use of old broadcast material by Fox . The first broadcast reached a little more than two million viewers.

Sarah Palin produced a reality show called Sarah Palin's Alaska in 2010 for TLC . Each of the planned eight episodes is expected to cost one million US dollars. There was no sequel.

In June 2011, her successor, Sean Parnell, posted 24,199 emails. The State of Alaska long opposed publication, but eventually approved it. In a “race against time”, the press correspondents scoured all material in the hope of a spectacular report.

Palin's page on Facebook had around three million subscribers in 2010. Recommendations and contributions from her there have an impact on, for example, the debate about health care reform or the candidacy of Republicans in the congressional elections on November 2, 2010. In 2014, four million people followed her on Facebook and one million on Twitter .

Sarah Palin started her own TV channel on July 27, 2014. The Sarah Palin Channel could be subscribed to via the digital video service Tapp for a fee of ten dollars; members of the armed forces were exempt from the fees. The content was mainly dedicated to the person Sarah Palin, including political comments from Palin, parenting advice, kitchen recipes and insights into the family life of the Palins. As of April 3, 2014, the cable broadcaster Sportsman Channel Amazing America broadcast a documentary soap Palins. The theme should be the pioneering spirit of the USA. The TV channel was discontinued on July 4, 2015 and none of the TV series had lasting success.

In the summer of 2016, a Palin court show modeled on Judge Judy was announced, even though Palin had no legal training. A network that would broadcast this show was not named.

Political positions

Sarah Palin is assigned to the right wing of the Republicans and represents decidedly conservative positions, which are also rejected by moderate Republicans. She is considered a particularly prominent representative of party rights, but sees herself as a representative of the average American and follows the politics of Ronald Reagan and characterizes herself as a " commonsense conservative ". Sarah Palin has numerous supporters , especially in the “Tea Party Movement,” which is named after the Boston Tea Party and which is strictly against Obama's policies and moderate-conservative Republicans. It is considered to be highly polarizing. According to a survey in December 2009, 44% of the Americans questioned said they were supporters of Palin, 47% of those questioned rejected it.

Species protection

In May 2008, she supported a campaign to remove polar bears from the Red List of Endangered Species on the grounds that their populations had recovered in recent years. Critics saw behind this statement, however, the fear of Palin and other Alaska politicians that nature conservation could hinder the state's oil and gas production. It also legalized the hunting of wolves and bears in Alaska by air.

Foreign policy

Sarah Palin at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center , July 2007

Sarah Palin is considered inexperienced in foreign policy. In September 2008 she declared that up to then she had only visited Canada and Mexico and otherwise only stayed abroad to visit soldiers in Germany and Kuwait . Palin applied for her first passport in 2007. Sarah Palin takes some rather conservative positions in foreign policy, but no coherent view in the form of a Palin doctrine is discernible.

In an interview in August 2008, Sarah Palin speculated that the Iraq war , in which the US is involved, was being fought for energy resources. In June 2008, during a church service, she described the goal of the war in Iraq as having been set by God. In her first television interview after the nomination as a candidate for the office of Vice President with the television station ABC on September 11, 2008, she relativized her statement: When asked, she stated that she did not presume to judge the will of God. Palin admitted that preparations for the war in Iraq had been "botched". During the televised duel with Democratic Vice-President Joe Biden, she stated that Democratic withdrawal plans were a white flag show.

Palin spoke in favor of the candidate in an interview with ABC on 11 September 2008. Georgia and Ukraine to NATO , even if this could lead to the US in alliance case Russia would have to declare war. Palin emphasizes her deep ties with Israel and is banking on deepening strategic relations between the US and Israel. In an ABC interview on September 11, 2008, she advocated support for a military strike by Israel against Iran if Israel deems such a strike necessary for its security. In a speech that was not given but was published in the New York Sun , she stated that the President of Iran and Iran's nuclear program must be halted. In a 2010 comment on Fox News, she called on Obama to declare war on Iran .

She saw negotiations on the START III agreement by the Obama administration as "naive". In November 2009, Palin spoke out in favor of Israel expanding its settlement activities in the occupied territories. In doing so, she assumed a position that no US government had taken in the past 40 years. In an interview with Barbara Walters , Palin said, "I don't think the Obama administration has any right to tell Israel what to do or what not to do."

Research and education policy

Sarah Palin is according to a report of the Los Angeles Times the creationism close. She herself believes, according to the report, that 6,000 years ago humans and dinosaurs populated the earth together. During her tenure as governor, she made attempts to have creationism taught in schools on an equal footing with evolution . Although she advocated teaching intelligent design alongside the theory of evolution , she also said that intelligent design should not necessarily be part of the curriculum. She advocates teaching abstinence before marriage in public schools, but has made contradicting statements about whether or not contraceptive methods should be taught.

Health policy

After her resignation, Palin posted her child with Down syndrome on her Facebook page to highlight the Obama administration's radical euthanasia efforts . With her Facebook entry, Sarah Palin made a significant contribution to emotionalising the debate about the health reform . This statement is related to Barack Obama's proposed health care reform and prompted the President to appeal to return to a factual discussion of reforming the American health system. The Democratic spokeswoman for the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi had scolded the Palin-triggered debate as "un-American". US Senator Lisa Murkowski , like Palin Republican from Alaska, also rejected Palin's claims as untrue.

“The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama's“ death panel ”so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their“ level of productivity in society, "whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil. "

“The America I know and love is not one where parents or my Down syndrome baby have to face Obama's execution court, leaving his bureaucrats to judge based on their subjective judgment, taking into account the level of productivity in the Meeting society, deciding whether I deserve preventive healthcare. Such a system is fundamentally evil. "

Domestic politics

Sarah Palin is considered socio-politically conservative. She is a member of Feminists for Life of America , who position themselves as strict anti-abortionists, including victims of rape and incest pregnancies. She emphasized this on the occasion of her election as governor. As a member of the National Rifle Association , she is also against restrictions on private gun ownership , opposes same-sex marriages , and supported an amendment to the Alaskan constitution that establishes marriage as a union between men and women. She advocates the death penalty . At the same time, she also has a reputation as a reformer and a staunch anti-corruption fighter , even if this image was increasingly questioned in the course of the presidential election campaign.

During the television debate on October 2, 2008 against Joe Biden , the candidate for the Democratic Vice Presidency, Sarah Palin proposed an extension of the powers of the US Vice President.

Economic and energy policy

Regarding the September 15, 2008 collapse of the Lehman Brothers bank in the wake of the 2007 financial crisis , she said she believed the United States financial system was out of date and the abuse and mismanagement on Wall Street needed to be cleaned up. She took up statements from McCain on the economic crisis, but did not explain which measures are specifically advocated by her.

Sarah Palin believes that God has blessed America with a variety of raw materials. These are to be exploited so that the money for these raw materials does not flow into countries that use raw material stocks as weapons.

She sees the energy policy of the past thirty years as a failure. Energy policy must be linked more clearly to US national security. Palin also criticizes the large energy companies, which only drove up energy prices. When used in energy policy it represents climate policy the view that global warming was not caused by man. However, it wants to create jobs by building coal-fired power plants with low carbon dioxide emissions ( clean coal technology , see CO 2 sequestration ). In the opinion of critics of Palin's plans, such power plants are not yet sufficiently developed. At the end of 2009 she called on Barack Obama to boycott the UN climate conference in Copenhagen and took the view that it was not certain whether climate change was caused by humans. In their view, agreements in Copenhagen would not affect the climate, but would cost jobs. In doing so, it tightened its political position, as it had not ruled out the influence of humans on climate change during the presidential election campaign.

In the aftermath of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico after the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig , Palin said on Twitter that foreign oil companies should not be naively trusted. She was referring to BP , the operator of the oil rig and her husband's former employer.

The US publisher Bluewater Productions (today: TidalWave Productions) published a biography of the politician in the form of a comic after the presidential election . The comic appeared in the “Female Forces” series and the first edition sold out in a short time.

On Election Day, November 4, 2008, Larry Flynt's magazine Hustler published the self-produced parodistic porn film Who's Nailin 'Paylin? A whole series has now developed from the film, albeit with the original spelling of the surname, which also targets other celebrities and politicians: It appeared with Letterman's Nailin 'Palin , Hollywood's Nailin' Palin , You're nailin 'Palin Interactive and Obama's Nailin 'Palin already has four followers.

In the video game Postal 3 , the figure of a hockey mom reminiscent of Palin is to appear.

The political drama Game Change - The Sarah Palin Effect from 2012 describes events in the final stages of the 2008 presidential campaign, in which Sarah Palin played an important role as a candidate for the office of vice president. Palin was played by Julianne Moore . The film is based on the book Game Change . Sarah Palin has criticized both the book and the film, claiming not to have seen the film.

Palin also appeared in the cartoon series South Park in the episode "Obama's Eleven," as a professional thief who, along with Barack Obama and John McCain, stole the Hope Diamond from the Smithsonian.

In the science fiction grotesque Iron Sky from 2012, an unnamed Sarah Palin is imagined as US President of the year 2018, who fends off an attack by the Nazis who fled to the far side of the moon.

In March 2020, Palin finished as Bear in the third season of the US branch of The Masked Singer, twelfth of a total of 18 places.
