John David "J. D. “Hayworth Jr. (born July 12, 1958 in High Point , North Carolina ) is an American politician . Between 1995 and 2003 he represented the sixth and from 2003 to 2007 the fifth constituency of the state of Arizona in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and political advancement

J. D. Hayworth attended High Point Central High School until 1976 and then until 1980 North Carolina State University in Raleigh , where he studied political science, among other things. He then worked as a radio and television journalist, mainly in sports reporting . He practiced this profession first in North Carolina and later in Arizona. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party .

Congressman

In 1994, Hayworth was elected to the US House of Representatives for the Sixth District of Arizona. After a few re-elections, he was able to exercise this mandate between January 3, 1995 and January 3, 2003. In the following two legislative periods between January 3, 2003 and January 3, 2007 he then represented the fifth district in the US Congress . There he took a conservative stance and advocated stricter immigration laws and better border controls. The background was the illegal border crossings from Mexico . Hayworth hit the headlines when it was discovered that his wife was receiving monthly payments from his lobbying group, TEAM PAC . He was also involved in a corruption scandal involving casinos in Indian lands; Jack Abramoff , the main character of this scandal, made payments to Hayworth and TEAM PAC . These matters contributed to his election in 2006.

Today he is working again as a television and radio journalist. He has three children with his wife Mary, whom he married in 1989.

In 2010, Hayworth ran for the Republican nomination for election to the US Senate . He was defeated in his party's primary elections, however, to long-time incumbent John McCain .
