Robert Lee "Bob" Stump (born April 4, 1927 in Phoenix , Arizona , † June 20, 2003 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1977 and 2003 he represented the third constituency of the state of Arizona in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and political advancement

After elementary school, Stump joined the US Navy during World War II . He then attended Tolleson High School until 1947 and then Arizona State University until 1953 . He worked as a farmer and was involved in politics. Stump first became a member of the Democratic Party , but switched to the Republicans in 1983 . Between 1959 and 1967 he was a member of the Arizona House of Representatives , from 1967 to 1976 he was a member of the State Senate , of which he became president in 1975.

Congressman

In the 1976 congressional election, Stump was elected to the US House of Representatives in the third constituency of Arizona. There he replaced Sam Steiger . Despite his change of party, Bob Stump was repeatedly confirmed in this mandate in the following congressional elections up to and including 2000. Thus he could remain in the US Congress between January 3, 1977 and January 3, 2003 . From 1995 to 2001 he was Chairman of the Veterans Committee and from 2001 to 2003 he headed the Armed Forces Committee, of which he had also been a member before. In 1986 he played briefly after the resignation of Barry Goldwater with the idea of ​​running for his successor in the US Senate ; but finally he decided against this project. For health reasons, Stump decided not to run for Congress again in 2002. He died in Phoenix on June 20, 2003.
