Harry E. Mitchell

Harry E. Mitchell (born July 18, 1940 in Phoenix , Arizona ) is an American politician and was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States from 2007 to 2011 .

Mitchell studied at Arizona State University in Tempe , where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1962 and his Master of Public Administration in 1980 . He served as a teacher at Tempe High School for 28 years from 1964 to 1992 and was an associate professor at Arizona State University. He was a member of Tempe City Council from 1970 to 1978 and was the city's mayor from 1978 to 1994 . In recognition of his services as mayor, a statue of him was erected and the city's government building was renamed the Harry E. Mitchell Government Complex .

From 1999 to 2006 Mitchell was a Senator in the Arizona Senate . In 2006 he held the office of chairman of the Democratic Party of Arizona and was elected for his party to the 110th Congress , where he represented the state of Arizona in the United States House of Representatives.

Mitchell is married with two children.
