Harold James "Harry" Mitchell (* 16th November 1895 in Tiverton , England , † 8. February 1983 in Twickenham , London Borough of Richmond upon Thames , England) was a British amateur boxer in light heavyweight .

Career

Mitchell was English champion five times in a row from 1922 to 1925 . He qualified for the Summer Olympics in 1924 in the French capital Paris and won in his first fight against the Dutchman Karel Miljon by his disqualification in round 3. His second fight brought him a point victory against the French Robert Foquet . Thus, he moved into the quarter-finals, where he met a Frenchman again with Georges Rossignon . Mitchell was able to decide this argument in the first round by knockout for himself.

In the semifinals he faced the Italian Carlo Saraudi . The fight was very boring, which was due to the fact that Saraudi held and clung excessively. According to many observers, he should have been disqualified for this reason, and for many it was an embarrassing performance by the Italian. Mitchell ultimately emerged as the point winner and was thereby in the final. There he had to deal with the later two-time Danish European champion Thyge Petersen . Mitchell won this fight on points and thus achieved the gold medal.
