Slobodan Kačar (born September 15, 1957 in Perućica near Jajce , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Yugoslavia ) is a former Yugoslav boxer of Serbian nationality.

amateur

Slobodan Kačar is an ethnic Serb and started boxing in 1972. As an amateur, he had a record of 241 wins with only 9 defeats. He was 1974 Yugoslav junior lightweight champion, and 1975 Yugoslav vice champion in welterweight. 1977 and 1978 he was Yugoslavian middleweight champion, and 1980 Yugoslavian light heavyweight champion.

In 1976 he was Balkan champion (U-20) in light middleweight, in 1977 Balkan champion in middleweight and 1979 Balkan champion in light heavyweight. Also in 1979, he won the 8th Mediterranean Light Heavyweight Games .

In 1977 he took part in the middleweight division at the 22nd European Championships in Germany, where he was defeated, however, in the quarterfinals by the later gold medalist Leonid Shaposhnikov just on points.

At the 2nd World Cup in 1978 in Serbia, he won the bronze medal in the middleweight division. He was only defeated in the semifinals to the later gold medalist from Cuba, José Gómez .

The highlight of his career, however, was undoubtedly his Olympic light heavyweight victory at the 22nd Summer Olympic Games in Moscow . He defeated Michael Nassoro from Tanzania in the second round, David Kvachadze from the Soviet Union in the quarterfinals, Herbert Bauch from the GDR in the semifinals and finally Paweł Skrzecz from Poland in the final . After Mate Parlov (1972), he became only the second Yugoslav Olympic champion in boxing.

For 1980 he was also awarded the Golden Ribbon ( Zlatna značka ) as "Yugoslavia's Sportsman of the Year".

professional

Kačar turned professional in Italy in 1983 . He won his first 20 fights in a row, 12 of which by knockout. In his third fight he defeated the later, multiple Italian champion Mwehu Beya by knockout victory. On February 8, 1984, he defeated the eventual European Champion ( EBU ) Yawe Davis on points. On August 8, 1985, he won on points against the two-time World Cup challenger Ramzi Hassan.

On December 21, 1985 he got the chance of the IBF world title in light heavyweight. Former WBA world champion Eddie Muhammad was chosen as his opponent , who won each of his last 10 fights. Kačar won the fight in Pesaro over 15 rounds on points and thereby became the first boxing world champion of Serbian nationality.

He lost the title, however, in his first title defense on September 6, 1986 in Las Vegas by tKo in the 5th round to Bobby Czyz . After a subsequent points win against Danny Lawford, he lost on May 15, 1987 to Blaine Logsdon and then ended his career.

In 2009 he was the guest of honor at the international boxing tournament “9. Radovan Bisic Memorial ”in Bosnia. There he caused a scandal because he sent the Serbian boxer Faruk Ajvazi to the start, who had not been selected by the coach of the Serbian national team for this tournament. As a result, the entire Serbian season boycotted the tournament and left Bosnia two hours before the start of the tournament. Ajvazi was then able to win the gold medal.

His older brother Tadija Kačar was also an amateur boxer, won the Olympic silver medal in the light middleweight division in 1976 and became vice world champion in the light heavyweight division in 1978.

Slobodan Kačar is also the uncle of professional footballer Gojko Kačar from the Hamburg sports club.
