Eddie Mustafa Muhammad (* the 30th April 1952 in New York as Edward Lee Gregory ) is a former American professional boxer and union official.

career

Muhammad made his debut in 1972 and initially boxed mainly in the middleweight division, where he lost twice on points, including against world class middleweight Bennie Briscoe .

After his promotion to the light heavyweight division, he defeated the highly rated Matthew Saad Muhammad and challenged the Argentine Víctor Galíndez on November 19, 1977 in Italy for the WBA title. Galíndez beat him on points and even had him down. In 1978 he was defeated by the undefeated James Scott.

On March 31, 1980, he received his second title chance. After a strong performance, he knocked out southpaw Marvin Johnson and thus secured the WBA light heavyweight title. He defended twice successfully, then made a foray into the heavyweight division, the cruiserweight division was not yet established at the time, where he was defeated by the undefeated Renaldo Snipes on points.

On July 18, 1981, he faced the undefeated Olympic champion Michael Spinks and lost his title on points. In the beginning he dominated, but then his fitness problems became noticeable. Spinks then dominated the second half of the fight and knocked him to the ground.

In 1982 he defeated Lottie Mwale and in 1985 Rickey Parkey . On December 21, 1985 he fought again in Italy against the undefeated Slobodan Kačar for the vacant IBF title and lost on points. Then he let his career end. He fought his last fights in 1988.

Trainer activity, JAB union

After his active time he worked as a trainer, among others for Iran Barkley and tried to launch the boxers' union JAB with moderate success in cooperation with the Teamster union . His opinion was also heard on the new legislation.
