Renaldo Snipes (born August 15, 1956 in Houston ) is a retired American heavyweight boxer. He is best known for his fight against Larry Holmes .

career

Snipes turned pro in November 1978. He beat after 19 wins against opponent Floyd Cummings (14-0) and the light heavyweight Eddie Mustafa Muhammad . In August 1981 he defeated the controversial Gerrie Coetzee in his adopted home New York . Nevertheless, the win brought him a title fight on November 6, 1981 against Larry Holmes.

What happened that made Snipes famous in the boxing scene to this day: As only one of two boxers in Holmes' heyday, he managed to knock the world champion down in the seventh round. Referee Rudy Ortega gave Holmes plenty of time to recover. When he later hit Snipes hard in return and he looked battered, the referee quickly stopped the fight, which was considered premature by the audience. Snipes then suspected that Ortega did not want to let Holmes' fight against Gerry Cooney break.

He boxed against the undefeated Scott Frank in a draw (Scott Frank later only lost to Holmes) and lost to Tim Witherspoon in 1982 . In the same year he managed a win against Trevor Berbick , his only undisputed win against a world-class heavyweight.

In 1983 he lost to world class heavyweight Greg Page . After this defeat he was never able to build on his old strength. He lost to Alfredo Evangelista and Rickey Parkey . From now on he was just a build-up opponent for upcoming talents like Tyrell Biggs . In 1992 he ended his career after losing to Jorge Luis González .

Relationship with John Gotti

He was well acquainted with the Mafioso John Gotti , appeared at his murder trial. He was heavily criticized by the New York press for his testimony at the trial. The press alleged that Snipes appeared there to intimidate the jury. Snipes said, “Why should I do this in the courtroom when everyone knew who I was? John Gotti was a huge boxing fan and a huge fan of mine. I got to know his entire family over the years as they came to my fights. I felt like a gentleman and he treated me like a gentleman. "
