career

As a teenager, Evangelista moved to Barcelona and took Spanish citizenship.

After a relatively successful amateur career, he made his debut on October 10, 1975 successfully against Angelo Visini. In his fourth fight he boxed only a draw against Jose Antonio Galvez. In 1976 he beat Lucien Rodriguez and Rudi Lubbers , among others . In 1977 he lost over 8 rounds on points against the Italian Lorenzo Zanon . Only three months later he boxed against Muhammad Ali for the WBC and WBA world championships. The fight, which was scheduled for 15 rounds, Evangelista lost unanimously on points.

In the same year he became European champion when he managed a technical knockout victory against Lucien Rodriguez - whom he had defeated a year earlier - in the 11th round. He defended this title in the same year against Pedro Soto and Jean-Pierre Coopman. In 1978 he defended his title against Billy Aird and Dante Cane and boxed for the second time for the WBC World Championship. This time the opponent was Larry Holmes . The undefeated Holmes knocked him out in the 7th round. It was also the first time that Evangelista lost by knockout.

The following year he defeated Lucien Rodriguez for the third time in a European title defense and boxed for the second time against the Italian Lorenzo Zanon, to whom he had already lost. Evangelista lost the second time to Zanon and thus lost his European title. In the same year he boxed against Felipe Rodriguez for the Spanish championship. The fight ended in a draw.

Two months later he was knocked out by Leon Spinks in the fifth round. In 1981 he boxed for the second time against Felipe Rodriguez for the Spanish championship. The fight ended in a draw again. In the summer of the same year he met the unbeaten Greg Page . Page knocked him out in the second round. Against the Englishman Terry O'Connor, he tied in Madrid . In 1982 he faced Lucien Rodriguez for the fourth time. This time Rodriguez was able to win for the first and only time against Evangelista.

In 1983 he defeated the strong Renaldo Snipes by a split point decision over 10 rounds. However, he lost his next fight against Hughroy Currie. This was followed by victories against Louis Pergaud and Marty Capasso, among others. In 1986 he had to accept a point defeat against Steffen Tangstad and Patrick Lumumba each. But he also achieved two classic knockout victories.

In 1987 he boxed against the Dutchman Andre van den Oetelaar for the vacant European title. Evangelista managed a technical knockout victory in round 5 and thus became European heavyweight champion for the second time. However, he lost the belt in the same year to the Swede Anders Eklund . After a classic knockout win in Round 2 in 1988 against Arthur Wright, Evangelista ended his career.
