Two years later he boxed against the reigning European champion Alfredo Evangelista . Eklund won this fight by TKo in round 8 and thus became European heavyweight champion for the second time. Like the first time, he was unable to defend his title this time either: Francesco Damiani took the title from him on October 9, 1987. As against Frank Bruno, he was also badly knocked out here. In 1989 he competed against Philipp Brown for the vacant WBA Americas Heavyweight Title and was able to prevail over 12 rounds on points. In the same year he was knocked out classically in the first round by former WBC and WBA world champion Tim Witherspoon . The following year he defeated Garing Lane over six rounds on points.
