Joe Bugner , born József Kreul Bugner , (born March 16, 1950 in Szőreg , Hungary ) is a former British-Australian heavyweight boxer and actor of Hungarian origin.

When he emigrated to Australia, he bought a vineyard with his wife Marlene. He gave up in 1989 after losing more than a million Australian dollars in it. He now lives in Gold Coast , Australia.

Boxing career

His professional debut in 1967 lost the counter Boxer Bugner 17-year by KO against Paul Brown , a boxer with just one win from four fights. Nevertheless, he was not regarded as a “glass chin” during his career, and until 1987 he only lost one time prematurely. A year later, Bugner was able to knock Paul Brown out in the rematch in the fourth round.

In 1969 Bugner competed in London against a boxer from Trinidad and Tobago named Ulric Regis and won on points. Regis collapsed after the fight and died three days later of a brain injury.

In the same year Bugner suffered his second defeat as a professional against an American southpaw. In 1970 he defeated Brian London in his last fight and Chuck Wepner prematurely. In 1971, at the age of 21, he beat Henry Cooper (then 36 years old, 40 wins, 13 defeats) in the fight for the European Championship, narrowly and controversially on points. Cooper then ended his career. Bugner then defended the title just on points against Jürgen Blin .

In the next fight, however, he lost the belt after a desperate performance to southpaw Jack Bodell. In 1972 he was able to win the title again with a second victory over Blin.

In 1973 he lost in non-title fights against Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier , but both of them could not knock him out. Frazier had him on the ground, but Bugner fought back determinedly. Many British consider this fight to be one of his best performances.

A year later he beat ex-middleweight and former WBA world champion Jimmy Ellis . This victory enabled him on June 30, 1975 a world championship fight against Ali. In the fight that took place in Malaysia , he mostly hid behind his double cover and after fifteen rounds he lost earned on points.

Against Richard Dunn he succeeded in defending his European title in 1976, a first-round knockout. But when he lost to Ron Lyle on points in 1977 , he temporarily retired from boxing and only fought one more fight until 1982. On his return to the ring, he went straight to the powerful Earnie Shavers and was defeated in the second round after being abandoned due to a laceration.

Despite some respectable successes, things went steadily downhill in the following period, he had no chance against Frank Bruno in 1987 and lost prematurely. After losing to Bruno, he resigned. From 1995 to 1998 he completed nine more fights, in which he was able to beat Bob Mirovic and James Smith , who was also getting on in years .
