Ron Lyle (born February 12, 1941 in Dayton , Ohio , † November 26, 2011 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American heavyweight boxer .

Life

Ron Lyle was one of 19 children of William and Nellie Lyle. In the early 1960s, he was sentenced to 15 to 25 years' imprisonment for manslaughter, but only seven and a half years of which he served in Colorado State Prison. He is said to have shot and killed 21-year-old Douglas Byrd in a gang altercation.

Lyle only became a professional boxer in 1971 at the age of 30. He quickly became famous for his great punching power. So he proposed in 1972 Buster Mathis Sr. kurzrundig KO . In 1973 he lost to veteran Jerry Quarry high on points. In the same year he defeated Jürgen Blin by knockout in the third round and thus ended his career. In interviews, Blin was very impressed with Lyle's clout, especially when compared to Muhammad Ali .

After winning points against Óscar Bonavena and Jimmy Ellis, he lost to counter-boxer Jimmy Young in 1975 . Nevertheless, he and not Young got a World Cup chance against Ali, who he was defeated by technical knockout in the 11th round. After a heavy right cross from Ali, he stumbled into the ropes and had to take more hits. Since he no longer seemed to be able to defend himself, the referee broke off the fight. Lyle had been on all three scoreboards by this point. After the fight, Lyle and his team expressed their displeasure with this decision because Lyle was not knocked down and they believed the fight had stopped too early. After a knockout against Earnie Shavers , he met George Foreman . After a year and a half of inactivity since losing the heavyweight title to Ali, the two met. Lyle was badly knocked out in the 5th round after beating Foreman twice. The Ring Magazine has named this conflict to the fight of the year. The fight also became a legend because it is considered to be one of the few clashes of such extremely powerful boxers in which the open exchange often expected in advance actually took place, whereas most such fights are often characterized by extreme caution on the part of both fighters, to towards the armistice.

In 1976 he lost again to Jimmy Young and despite a win against Joe Bugner , his relegation began, so that he ended his career in 1980 after a first-round knockout by the undefeated Gerry Cooney . In 1995, at the age of 54, he completed four more fights against unknown opponents, which he was able to defeat briefly by knockout.

Most recently he worked as a trainer.
