Jorge Luis González (born October 19, 1964 in Havana ) is a former Cuban heavyweight boxer.

amateur

González was an amateur twice Cuban champion: 1983 with a final victory over Teófilo Stevenson and 1988. Later in 1983 he also won the Pan-American Games in Caracas in the super heavyweight, including a semi-final victory over Tyrell Biggs .

He was able to repeat this triumph at the 1987 Games in Indianapolis . He defeated Riddick Bowe in the semi-finals , whom he knocked down several times, and Lennox Lewis in the final . In the same year, however, he was defeated by Lewis at the North American Championship in Toronto. He had a record of 220 wins and 13 losses.

In April 1991 he sat at an amateur tournament in Finland from the Cuban team and turned professional in the USA .

Professional career

González's professional debut took place in June 1991. Due to his escape and his relatively successful amateur career, he aroused high expectations, so that he was considered a potential world champion right from the start of his professional career. That also seemed to be confirmed, he was able to defeat his first 23 opponents early with one exception.

He always seemed a bit lazy about training, arrogant and sometimes smoked a cigar in front of cameras. His management described this as " non-conformism ".

He benefited from his amateur rival Bowe holding the WBO title. Thus he offered himself as a media effective opponent for a title defense Bowes. The fight finally took place on June 17, 1995. Bowe, the best performance of his career certified by his coach Futch, won by knockout in the sixth round.

González lost in the following years to Tim Witherspoon , Ross Puritty , Michael Grant , Paea Wolfgramm and Joe Mesi , among others , and finally ended his career in 2002.
