Joe Mesi (born November 27, 1973 in Tonawanda , New York State ) is an American heavyweight boxer.

amateur

Mesi was a good amateur at the US national level. According to his own statements, his balance was 72-8. He claims to have knocked Hasim Rahman but lost a second fight on points. At the elimination tournament for the 1996 Olympic Games , he lost by knockout against Lawrence Clay-Bey. This result shapes his image as a “white hope” with a glass chin.

professional

In 1997, Mesi turned professional. He won his first 18 fights against mostly unknown opponents . In April 2001 he won premature victories against the Cuban exile Jorge Luis González and Bert Cooper . His opponents got noticeably better now. He subsequently beat David Izon and DaVarryl Williamson , whom he knocked out in the first round.

Only against Monte Barrett , against whom he was down, did he have significant problems. In March 2004 he boxed against Vasily Shirov and had to go down three times, but still won on points. After the fight against the Kazakhs, several blood clots in his brain led to his boxing license being suspended and a hiatus of several years.

His license expired at the end of 2005. After trying unsuccessfully to renew it in the USA, he was issued a new license in Puerto Rico in February 2006 . There he finally returned to the ring in April 2006.
