David Izon (* 29. April 1968 in Lagos , Nigeria as David Izonritei ) is a former Nigerian heavyweight boxer.

amateur

Izon won the silver medal at the 1991 Military World Championships, losing in the final to Bert Teuchert, Germany (19: 8). At the Pan-African Games in Cairo in the same year he won the gold medal, but was eliminated at the 1991 World Championships in Sydney in the first fight against Arnold Vanderlyde , Netherlands ( 22-2 ). In 1992 he took part in the Olympic Games for Nigeria . On the way to the final he beat Kirk Johnson , Canada (9: 5) and David Tua , Netherlands (12: 7), but lost in the fight for gold to Félix Savón , Cuba (14: 1).

Professional career

It was 1993, Alton Merkenson, the trainer of Roy Jones Jr. , the US expert. What was particularly impressive about his fights was the tremendous power of his right hand, technically good boxing was less seen.

So he finally lost in his 19th professional fight in March 1996 against Maurice Harris on points. Harris had five wins and six losses at the time, but later became known for victories against some well-known boxers such as Sjarhej Lyachowitsch . In the next fight he faced his amateur rival Tua. Here Izon was ahead on points until shortly before the end, but lost due to a technical knockout in the twelfth and final lap.

He knocked Lou Savarese in 1997, was called world class, but then lost prematurely to the unbeaten Michael Grant , in contrast to the Tua fight he had no chance here from the start.

He then won by knocking out Darrol Wilson, who had inflicted his first defeat on Shannon Briggs , and the undefeated young star Derrick Jefferson . Izon was intended as a demanding opponent to build up for Jefferson and had to accept heavy hits in the fight, so that he was clearly behind on the scoreboard. Towards the end of the fight, however, Jefferson lost his strength and Izon took the chance in the ninth round to a knockout.

Then he was scheduled for fights against Mike Tyson , Hasim Rahman and Wladimir Klitschko . However, these fights were canceled each time, leaving him inactive for fourteen months between 2000 and 2001.

In the end he was put in December 2001 against the unbeaten Fres Oquendo , an opponent who was assessed as a good boxer with little punching power. Izon lost the one-sided fight by technical knockout in the third round. He was just a shadow of days gone by. He also went KO against the undefeated Joe Mesi . When he suffered the third loss in a row against Al Cole, he ended his career.

Others

His brother Roger Izonritei is also a professional boxer.
