Derrick Jefferson (born March 10, 1968 in Oak Park ) is an American heavyweight boxer.

amateur

Jefferson won all of his 19 amateur fights and was victorious in the 1994 national Golden Gloves tournament. He gave Michael Grant his only defeat as an amateur and also beat the later Olympian Lawrence Clay-Bey .

Professional career

In 1995 Jefferson turned professional and initially defeated a number of little-known opponents . His first notable opponents were former World Championship challengers Bert Cooper and Obed Sullivan, later opponent of Vitali Klitschko , whom he beat on points.

Much of his reputation comes from the fight against Maurice Harris in November 1999. In one of the most spectacular heavyweight fights of the 1990s, both boxers had to go to the ground before Jefferson succeeded in the sixth round with an effective left hook of the knockout .

In his next fight against David Izon in January 2000 he went after this performance as the clear favorite. In the early stages of the encounter, he clearly dominated the Nigerian, but in the later rounds, weaknesses in stamina became noticeable, which Izon was able to take advantage of and won through technical knockout in the ninth round.

Next he met the Russian Oleg Maskayev . In the first round he went down and broke his ankle and then went KO in the fourth round.

After these two defeats in a row, he still got a WBO title fight against Wladimir Klitschko in 2001 . However, he had no chance and was knocked out in the second round.

He then boxed only sporadically. In April 2005 he was defeated prematurely by DaVarryl Williamson .
