Fres Oquendo (born April 1, 1973 in San Juan ) is an American heavyweight boxer of Puerto Rican origin.

Professional career

The counter boxer Oquendo turned professional in 1997. In 1999, he defeated surprise the undefeated Nigerian bronze medalist of the Olympic Games in Atlanta , Duncan Dokiwari , on points. He then beat ex-world championship challengers Phil Jackson and Bert Cooper , as well as amateur world champion Ramón Garbey on points. Against Garbey, however, he was on the ground for the first time in his career.

In 2001 he had the second surprise. He was able to outclass Clifford Etienne , who was also unbeaten and highly regarded at this point in time, and defeat by technical knockout . In the next fights he won early against Obed Sullivan and the Nigerian David Izon , Olympic silver medalist from 1992.

He suffered his first defeat in 2002 against David Tua , who knocked him out in the ninth round after an even fight. After beating the Brazilian George Arias, he struggled against Maurice Harris and was behind on points before he was knocked out in the tenth round.

He signed with Don King and got a title chance on September 20, 2003 against IBF world champion Chris Byrd . Television and the writing guild subsequently agreed that he had won, but Byrd was awarded the points win.

He was then allowed to compete in April 2004 for the WBA title against John Ruiz , who was also under contract with King. After a poor performance by both boxers, he went KO in the eleventh round.

After a subsequent two-year hiatus, he did not return to the ring until 2006 under his new promoter Lou DiBella . On November 10, 2006 he lost just on points against the 44-year-old Evander Holyfield after he had to go to the ground in the first round. Without the precipitation, the fight would have been considered a draw.

In December 2008 he lost by split decision to James Toney . In Jul 2009 he managed a knockout victory in the 9th round against the former WBA world champion Bruce Seldon .
