Ramón Garbey (born March 31, 1971 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a Cuban boxer . He is the nephew of Rolando Garbey .

amateur

Garbey was a formidable amateur boxer. He won all three duels against his compatriot Juan Carlos Gómez , twice defeated Antonio Tarver and also beat Sven Ottke early in 1992.

In 1989 Garbey was junior middleweight world champion in Bayamón , and in 1990 he finished second at the World Cup tournament in Havana . In 1991 he won the Pan American Games in the Seniors and took part in the World Championships in Sydney , where he defeated Chris Byrd , but lost to the Russian Alexander Lebsjak in the final .

For the 1992 Olympic Games , however, he could not qualify because Ariel Hernández , whom he was defeated twice that year, was nominated as a Cuban representative in the middleweight division. In 1993 he switched to the light heavyweight division and became light heavyweight world champion in Tampere , including a victory over Wojciech Bartnik. At the 1994 World Cup in Bangkok , however, he failed in the round of 16. He won his only national championship in 1996, but lost in the same year at the Chemistry Cup against Vasily Schirow and at a tournament in Bulgaria against Pietro Aurino .

professional

In 1996 he fled Cuba and became a professional cruiserweight in Florida .

He defeated the good taker Leeonzer Barber prematurely, but was surprisingly defeated in 1999 by Napoleon Tagoe and a resurgent James Toney on points. He tried briefly in the heavyweight division against the unbeaten Fres Oquendo , had it on the ground and lost again on points for lack of energy. In 2001 he was able to knock out Ezra Sellers and Saul Montana, but then fought only irregularly. He won his last fight after a three-year break in 2009 against Mike Sheppard , his record is 19 wins (13 by knockout) and 4 defeats in 23 professional fights.
