Sixto Soria Savigne (born April 27, 1954 ) is a former Cuban boxer . He was world champion in 1978 and winner of the silver medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in the light heavyweight division.

Career

Sixto Soria grew up in Cuba in the 1970s to become one of the best Cuban and therefore best amateur boxers in the world in the light heavyweight division. After joining the Cuban national team, he was trained by the famous Alcide Zagarra and was a member of the Cuban army. In Cuba there were already two big boxing tournaments every year, the Playa Girón , that was the national Cuban championships, and the Giraldo Córdova Cardín , a big international boxing tournament. Since the Cuban boxers were unusually strong in those years, it was the case that the Cuban boxers were mostly among themselves from the semifinals onwards at the Giraldo Córdova Cardín.

Sixto Soria finished second in the 1975 Cuban championship behind Gilberto Carrillo and came third in the Giraldo Córdova Cardín behind Orestes Pedroso and Gilberto Carrillo . In 1976 he won both tournaments and qualified for participation in the Olympic Games that year in Montreal . In Montreal he defeated, as Cuban champion he was automatically one of the favorites, José Rosa from Puerto Rico and Wolfgang Gruber from Germany each by knockout in the 2nd round and won over Costică Dafinoiu from Romania by breaking off in the 1st round and stood thus in the final against Leon Spinks from the United States. In this fight, Spinks was the physically stronger boxer. Sixto Soria withstood Spink's powerful attacks only up to the 3rd round and was taken out of the ring unable to defend in this round. He won the silver medal with it .

1977 Sixto Soria won the light heavyweight title in Panama City at the 8th Central America and Caribbean Championships. Surprisingly, he had to admit defeat to Anatoly Klimanov from the Soviet Union on points at the 13th Army Championship of the Warsaw Pact States (SKDA Championship) in Havana .

In 1978 Sixto Soria won two major international tournaments in Europe . At the Strandja Memorial in Sofia he defeated Milan Kalinow from Bulgaria in the final and at the tournament for the Golden Belt in Bucharest he won the final over Algirdas Jancauskas from the USSR , each in the light heavyweight division, on points. He was also nominated for the 1978 World Cup in Belgrade . There he won over Mohamed Mama from Ghana , Benny Pike from Australia , Nikolai Erofejew from the USSR and in the final over Tadija Kačar from Yugoslavia on points and thus became world light heavyweight champion.

In 1979 Sixto Soria won, as in 1978, at the Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament in Havana in the final over Hermenegildo Báez on points. At the Cuban championship in 1979 he was defeated by Hermenegildo Báez. He was also defeated at the Chemistry Cup tournament in Halle (Saale) against Herbert Bauch from the GDR . Nevertheless, he was sent to the Pan American Games in San Juan (Puerto Rico) , but disappointed there, because he lost there in the quarterfinals against the American Tony Tucker and only came in 5th place.

After this tournament there were differences between Sixto Soria and the communist-controlled Cuban boxing association. Soria was removed from the national team and was no longer allowed to box. Since that time he has been making a living as an illegal taxi driver.
