Herbert Bauch (born May 18, 1957 in Berlin ) is a former German boxer . He won a bronze medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1978 World Championships and at the 1980 Olympic Games .

Career

Herbert Bauch from Berlin began boxing as a teenager. He was already successful in the junior area and became a member of TSC Berlin . In 1975 the 1.82 meter tall athlete first appeared when he defeated Grzegorz Skrzecz in a junior international match between the GDR and Poland in Cottbus by a technical knockout in the first round.

In 1976 he started for the first time in the GDR senior championship, but as a 19-year-old relatively inexperienced fighter he lost to the experienced vice world champion Bernd Wittenburg from SC Dynamo Berlin by breaking off in the second round. In 1977 he was the first GDR middleweight champion with a point win over Harald Büsch from SC Traktor Schwerin . At the European Championships in 1977 in Halle (Saale) , however, it was not used because the association's management once again trusted Bernd Wittenburg.

In 1978 Herbert Bauch succeeded in becoming GDR light heavyweight champion. He defeated Peter Watzke from SC Traktor Schwerin on points (5-0). After the resignation of Bernd Wittenburg and Ottomar Sachse at the end of 1977, he was given a starting place at the 1978 World Cup in Belgrade . In the light heavyweight division he showed excellent performances and defeated the American Martin Elmer by breaking off in the first round and Costica Chiracu from Romania on points. In the semifinals he met Tadija Kačar from Yugoslavia , against whom he lost on points in the cauldron of Belgrade. He won a bronze medal right away at his first start in an international championship .

In 1979 he also started at the European Championships in Cologne . But there he lost his first fight in the round of 16 against Kurt Seiler from the Federal Republic of Germany on points, whereby this defeat was quite narrow with 2: 3 judges' votes. Before these European championships, Herbert Bauch had a great success at the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) . In the semifinals he defeated Sixto Soria from Cuba, who belonged to the absolute world elite, on points and defeated Michael Seefeldt from the GDR in the final by breaking off in the 2nd round.

In 1980 Herbert Bauch was also used at the Olympic Games in Moscow . In the light heavyweight division he defeated Boschidar Ivanov from Bulgaria on points (5-0) and was knocked out in the second round over Geoffrey Pike from Australia . With that he had reached the semi-finals and won an Olympic bronze medal . It stayed with this medal, because in the semifinals he lost to Slobodan Kačar from Yugoslavia by breaking off in the 2nd round.

Only a few results are known from Herbert Bauch from 1981. He was replaced by Ralf Nebrig in the GDR . From 1982 he no longer appears in any results list, so it must be assumed that Herbert Bauch ended his career at the end of 1981, although only 24 years old. The reasons for this are not known.
