Wes McLeod (born October 24, 1957 in Vancouver ) is a retired Canadian soccer player .

Career

McLeod played in the adult division for the Canadian clubs Coquitlam Blue Mountain and Vancouver Italia before he signed a professional contract in the North American Soccer League (NASL) with the Tampa Bay Rowdies in 1977 . Twice he reached the championship final, the so-called Soccer Bowl, with Tampa Bay, but lost in both finals with his team. By the dissolution of the NASL in 1984, McLeod had played 188 league games and scored 34 goals, and he made another 23 appearances (9 goals) in the play-off rounds.

Following the dissolution of the league, McLeod turned to the indoor soccer popular in North America , with which he came into contact during his time at Tampa. First he played for New York Cosmos in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), but after the team had withdrawn from the game during the season due to low attendance numbers, he joined the Dallas Sidekicks , for which he continued until his retirement in 1992 was active. In 1987 he won the MISL championship with Dallas, in 1989 he was appointed to the All-Star Team, while in 1990 he was named the best defensive player in the league. During his time with Dallas, he completed a total of 367 games in the league and scored 84 goals. In January 2004, shortly before the sidekicks broke up, his number 8 was banned.

In 2005 he was inducted into the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame , and his uncle Norman McLeod was among the other new entries this year .

National team

In 1975 McLeod made his debut at the age of 17 for the Canadian Olympic team. In the following year he was part of the Canadian squad at the Olympic soccer tournament and was used in the two preliminary round defeats against the Soviet Union and North Korea. For his first appearance in an official international match, McLeod came in October 1976 as part of qualifying for the 1978 World Cup against Mexico. In qualifying for the 1982 World Cup , the defender was part of the Canadian team and played seven of the nine qualifying games. The Canadian team missed participation in the finals due to a draw on the last day of the match against Cuba.

He made the last two of his 17 international appearances in 1985 during the President's Cup in South Korea.
