The Canadian national soccer team represents the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) as a selection team on an international level in games against teams from other national associations. The team's coach nominates the squad. All football players with Canadian citizenship are available to him for his selection.
history
The Canadians played their first international game on November 28, 1885 against the USA in Newark (New Jersey) . It was lost 1-0 and is to be considered an unofficial game. On September 19, 1888, a Canadian team played in Scotland and lost 4-0. The first official game took place on June 7, 1924 in Brisbane, Australia against the national team of Australia. The Canadians also lost this 3-2.
Internationally, Canadian footballers have had little success to date. The Canadian national team had their first and so far only appearance at a soccer world championship in 1986 in Mexico , but after games against France (0: 1), Hungary (0: 2) and the USSR (0: 2) without point and Goal was eliminated in the preliminary round. In qualifying for the 2006 World Cup , they failed early in the second qualifying round to Guatemala and the later World Cup participant Costa Rica.
In addition to qualifying for the 1986 World Cup , Canada celebrated its greatest success by surprisingly winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2000 and reaching the semi-finals in 2002 and 2007. In 1985 the national team won the CONCACAF Championship , the forerunner of gold Cups, win.
Stadion
The national stadium for Canadians is the National Soccer Stadium in Toronto , Ontario , known as BMO Field when Canadian Major League Soccer agent Toronto FC plays there. Participation in the Olympic Games
1900 | not participated |
1904 in St. Louis | Olympic champion |
After 1904, the senior national team stopped taking part in the Olympic Games and the qualifying games. In 1976 Canada participated as host with an Olympic team, but failed in the preliminary round. In 1984 , the Canadian Olympic team reached the quarter-finals, in which they lost to the Brazilian Olympic team on penalties.
Participation in soccer world championships
Although Canada has been a FIFA member since 1913, the team took part in qualifying for the 1958 World Cup for the first time, then again not until 1966, but in all qualifications since then. But she was only able to qualify for a final round. All games were lost there. In the all-time table of World Cup finalists, Canada is 71st and like four other teams has not yet scored a World Cup goal.
