The 1989 CONCACAF Nations Cup was the tenth game of the continental football championship for North Central America and the Caribbean and took place from March 19 to November 19. As in 1985 , the competition was played back and forth without a host country and was also considered to qualify for the World Cup for the fifth time in a row .

Costa Rica and the USA qualified for the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

qualification

The qualification consisted of two rounds. The five best-placed teams in the world rankings (El Salvador, Honduras, Canada, Mexico, USA) only started in the second round. The remaining ten teams played in knockout games with two legs. The five winners and the newcomers also played a knockout round.
