The CONCACAF Gold Cup ( Spanish : Copa de Oro de la CONCACAF ), also known as the Gold Cup for short , has been a continental tournament for national soccer teams that has been held since 1963 to determine the soccer champions of North, Central America and the Caribbean. The competition is organized by CONCACAF .

After CONCACAF was founded (1961), the CONCACAF Nations Cup (Spanish: Copa de Naciones de la CONCACAF ) initially replaced the previous tournaments in North America ( NAFC championship ) and Central America and the Caribbean ( CCCF championship ). This was held every two years from 1963 and every four years from 1973, when it received the status of a qualifying tournament for the World Cup . In 1991 it was renamed the CONCACAF Gold Cup and has been held every two years since then. Since then it has lost its role as a World Cup qualifying tournament.

National football teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean take part in the competition. From 1996 to 2005, South American teams also took part by invitation. In addition, South Korea, one of the hosts of the Soccer World Cup 2002 , as the first Asian country, and in 2005 South Africa, host of the Soccer World Cup 2010 , as the first African country, were invited to the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2000 and 2002 . So far, no visiting team has won the tournament, but Brazil reached the final twice and Colombia once. No guest teams have been invited since 2007 .

In February 2018, CONCACAF announced that it would increase the field of participants from 12 to 16 teams from the Gold Cup 2019. The newly established CONCACAF Nations League will also serve as a qualification tournament .
