Qualification for Women's soccer World Cup

The CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup is the Central and North American championship for women's national soccer teams . It currently bears the official name CONCACAF Women's World Cup Qualifying , as it is mainly used to determine the participants in the women's soccer World Cup . The region was initially entitled to two permanent places, and three teams have been able to qualify since 2014. The fourth place competed in a play-off against a representative from another continent (most recently South America) for another starting place. In addition, the team of the host country was automatically qualified for the World Cup if it took place in North America and then did not take part in the Gold Cup.

The first tournament took place in Haiti in 1991 . Until 1998 the competition was called the CONCACAF Women's Championship. The record winners are the USA with eight titles, which again won the tournament in 2018 and in 2014 achieved their highest victory in a final of the competition with a 6-0 win over Costa Rica. So far, all titles have gone to either the USA or Canada, which won in 1998 when the USA did not participate as they had already qualified as hosts for the 1999 World Cup, as well as in 2010, when the USA was the only game in the Gold Cup in the semifinals lost to Mexico.

In 1993 New Zealand and in 2000 Brazil and China each took part as visiting teams.

The record participant is Trinidad and Tobago , which was the only team to take part in all events. Canada and the USA did not take part once because as World Cup hosts they didn't have to qualify for the World Cup. Mexico did not participate in 1993.

mode

Eight national teams take part in the final round. There has been a qualification since 1998. Since then Canada , Mexico and the USA have automatically qualified - provided they participate. There are also two nations from the Central America qualification and three or four nations from the Caribbean qualification.

The eight national teams have been divided into two groups of four teams each since 2000 (in 1998 there were two groups of three teams each). Within the group, each team plays each other once. The group winners and runners-up reach the semi-finals. The semi-final winners reach the final, the semi-final losers play for third place.
