The national teams of the USA, Canada and Mexico were automatically qualified for the finals as the top three teams in the last tournament . However, Canada canceled its participation due to the already established qualification as host for the World Cup. The field of participants should be completed by three teams from the Caribbean and two teams from Central America , but the Caribbean got a fourth starting place after the withdrawal of Canada. The qualification of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) took place from May 21 to August 26, 2014, the two participants of the Unión Centroamericana de Fútbol (UNCAF) were determined at the UNCAF tournament from May 19 to 25, 2014.

mode

In the final round, the eight participants formed two preliminary round groups with four teams each, of which the first two qualified for the semi-finals. In the group stage, each team played against every other team in their group according to the championship mode . If two or more teams are tied, the following criteria are decisive:

  1. higher number of points from matches between teams with the same points;
  2. better goal difference from these games;
  3. higher number of goals scored from these games;
  4. better goal difference in all games;
  5. higher number of goals scored in all games;
  6. Drawing of lots.

From the semi-finals onwards, the tournament continued in the knockout system , with the winner of a game qualifying for the next round. If a game ended in a draw after the end of normal playing time, there was an extension of 15 minutes twice. If no decision was made after extra time, the winner was determined on penalties .

The two finalists and the winner of the game for third place qualified directly for the world championship, while the loser of the game for third place still has to play playoffs against the third of the South American Championship 2014. As a French overseas territory, Martinique is not a member of FIFA and therefore could not qualify for the World Cup. Therefore, Martinique only took part in the group stage. If Martinique had placed themselves in the top two of the group, the next-placed team would have moved up to play in the semi-finals. However, this did not happen.
