The eighth CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup , the North American championship in women's football , was held in Mexico from October 28 to November 8, 2010 . This was the first time Mexico hosted the tournament. The games took place in Cancun . Canada became CONCACAF champions for the second time since 1998.
The tournament served as qualification for the 2011 World Cup in Germany . In addition to the tournament winner Canada, Mexico qualified directly for the World Cup. Top favorite USA came in third and had to play against Italy for a place in the World Cup.
The national teams of the USA, Canada and Mexico had automatically qualified for the finals as the top three teams in the previous tournament . The field of participants was completed by three teams from the Caribbean and two teams from Central America .
In Central America, six teams initially played in two groups of three. The two group winners became the region’s finals. In the Caribbean, 15 teams initially played in five groups of three for a place in the second qualifying round. The five group winners and the best runner-up played together with Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago in two groups of four. The two group winners qualified directly, the runners-up play in the third qualifying round for the last Caribbean place in the final round.
The two finalists of the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup 2010 are directly qualified for the 2011 World Cup. The USA, as the winner of the game for third place, played in a round trip against Italy , fifth in the European qualification, for another place at the World Cup.
