The Mexican national women's soccer team represents Mexico in international women's soccer .
The national team is subordinate to the Mexican Football Association and was coached by Leonardo Cuéllar from 1998 to 2016 .
The Mexican women's team played their first unofficial game in 1970 at the unofficial World Cup in Italy and finished third after a 3-2 win against England . A year later, Mexico hosted the second unofficial World Cup, in which the Mexicans reached the final and lost 3-0 to Denmark in front of 110,000 spectators, with Susanne Augustesen , who was only 15 , scoring all three goals. The outstanding Mexican players of this era were Alicia Vargas “La Pelé”, María Eugenia Rubio “La Peque” and María Zaragoza “La Borjita”. Other top players included Irma Ramírez "La Piolín", Juanita Chávez "La Pantera", Paula Pérez "La Cuchi-Cuchi", María de la Luz Hernández "La Trenza Voladora" and Martha Coronado "La Chispita".
The first official international match took place on July 21, 1986 in the Italian town of Jesolo against Japan and was lost 3-0. After another game against Italy , which was lost 6-0, there was an international break of five years, which ended with the record defeat against the USA.
So far, the selection has only participated in three official world championships and one Olympic tournament. The 2004 Olympics reached the quarter-finals, which is still the greatest success on the global football stage today.
In the North American championship you have been twice second and four times third. The Mexican selection is overshadowed by the USA and Canada , but was able to beat the USA for the first time in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup in 2010, which meant that the USA did not reach the final for the first time. This enabled the Mexicans to qualify for a world championship for the second time. At the World Cup , the Mexicans met England , Japan and New Zealand in the preliminary round .
In the FIFA world rankings, Mexico rose from 31st in July 2003 to 21st in December 2011.

World Championship
Mexico was able to qualify for a World Cup finals three times, but has never made it through the preliminary round. A victory in a World Cup game has not yet been achieved, but points were won in the two games against England and New Zealand in 2011 . Mexico led 2-1 in the game against New Zealand until the fourth minute of stoppage time, before New Zealander Hannah Wilkinson managed to equalize. Maribel Domínguez is the only Mexican player to have played in both World Cup finals and scored both the first and the most World Cup goals for Mexico.
