from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article covers the Mexican national soccer team of women at the soccer world championship of women 2011 in Germany . Mexico was ranked 24th in the FIFA World Cup before the World Cup and was part of the World Cup finals for the second time. In 1999 , when they participated for the first time, Mexico failed in the preliminary round with 1:15 goals as the bottom of the group. In 1978 he played three games as a midfielder for Mexico (including the 0: 6 against Germany).

Mexico qualified for the finals by beating the USA in the 2010 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup semi- finals. It was the first victory of the Mexicans against the USA in the Gold Cup. In the final, Mexico lost 1-0 to Canada, who were also qualified. The most goals for Mexico were scored by Maribel Domínguez (6, including 4 in the 7-2 win against Guyana).

Group games

In Group B, Mexico first met vice European champions England. It was only the second game between the two teams; the English won the first 5-0 in 2005. Surprisingly, the Mexicans started with the only 16-year-old goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago , the youngest goalkeeper in World Cup history. The English, in which captain Faye White made her 100th international match, initially had field advantages as the Mexicans started very nervously. In the 21st minute, Fara Williams consequently headed a corner to make it 1-0 for England. Surprisingly, Mónica Ocampo equalized in the 33rd minute when the English goalkeeper Karen Bardsley didn't look good. Then the English pushed for the second goal, but did not come to dangerous goals because they failed again and again in one-on-one situations against the Mexican defense. So they could only check Cecilia Santiago by long shots, with which she had no problems. As the length of the game increased, the game became more balanced and towards the end the Mexicans had better chances to score. In the end, both teams lacked the strength to decide the game in their favor. For Mexico it was the first point win in a World Cup game, the previous three games were all lost.

In the second game, Mexico faced Japan , third in the 2010 Asian Women's Cup . Mexico did not get a chance against the fast combined game of the Japanese, after 15 minutes it was 0-2 with goals from Homare Sawa and Shinobu Ōno . In the 39th minute, Sawa even increased to 3-0 for Japan. In the second half, the Japanese went back a gear so that Mexico could shift the game a little more into the Japanese half, but the Mexicans could not create scoring opportunities. It was more the Japanese who created good scoring opportunities. In the 80th minute, Sawa took advantage of one of them and scored her third goal.

Mexico now needed a victory in the final game against the already eliminated Oceania champions New Zealand , against whom they could win 5-0 in the only game so far, in order to advance . They also needed the help of the Japanese against England. Accordingly, Mexico entered the game with great enthusiasm and made it 1-0 after just two minutes through Stephany Mayor . New Zealand were shocked and struggled to get into the game. Only in the 26th minute there was a first opportunity to score, but the Mexican goalkeeper thwarted it. In the 29th minute, she initiated the 2-0 for Mexico with a wide kick, which Maribel Domínguez scored single-handedly after a header extension at the center line. The New Zealanders pushed for the connection in the second half, but their efforts weren't rewarded until the 90th minute when Rebecca Smith made it 2-1. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Hannah Wilkinson also equalized. But since England won against Japan, this draw was of no consequence for Mexico. With two draws in three games, this was the best result so far at a World Cup for Mexico.
