Karen Bardsley (born October 14, 1984 in Santa Monica ) is a US- born English soccer player . The goalkeeper plays for Manchester City WFC and the English national team and took part in the 2012 Olympics with Team GB .

Career

societies

Bardsley studied graphic design at California State University in Fullerton , during which time he played for Cal State Fullerton Titans . She was named "Big West Conference Freshman of the Year" in her first season. The following season, she broke her leg in her first game after 28 minutes and was no longer used. In 2004 she was absent from the first eight games. After her comeback she was named “Big West Conference Goalkeeper of the Year”, an honor that she received in 2005 as well.

After completing her studies, she began her career at Ajax America Women , a third-rate US club, then moved up a class to the W-League team Pali Blues and in 2009 to Sky Blue FC , a women's professional soccer club .

For the 2014 season, Bardsley moved to the league newcomer Manchester City. There she stayed in eleven of 14 league games five times without conceding a goal, so that Manchester could stay fifth in the league. She also won the WSL Cup with the Citizens , conceding only two goals in seven games. Also in 2015 , she stayed five clean sheets in eleven of 14 league games, making Manchester runner-up. In the WSL Cup, Manchester was eliminated in the quarter-finals. In 2016 she was used in all 16 league games, where she did not concede a goal 12 times and thus contributed to Manchester ending the season as champions. In addition, she won the WSL Cup again with Manchester, but was not used, and the final of the FA Women's Cup with a 4-1 against Birmingham City . In the following "Spring Series" called short transition season, it was only used in two of eight games. Manchester finished the Series in second place. Manchester also finished second in the 2017/18 season, but Bardsley did not appear until the second half of the season and remained clean four times in seven games. The 2018/19 season saw her mostly on the bench, she was only used in five league games. On February 23, 2019, however, she was again with the Citizens in the WSL Cup final, which was won 4-2 on penalties against Arsenal after 120 minutes without a goal, and she was able to save two penalties. On May 4, 2019, they also won the FA Women's Cup final by beating West Ham United 3-0 .

She also took part in the 2016/17 UEFA Women's Champions League for the first time with Manchester and remained clean in six of eight games, including a 1-0 second leg win at Olympique Lyon in the semifinals. But since the home game against the defending champions was lost 3-1, it was not enough for the final. In the UEFA Women's Champions League 2017/18 she came just three appearances, but remained at 5: 0 in the second round at Lillestrøm SK Kvinner clean sheet and a goalless semi-final home game against Lyon. Since the second leg was lost 1-0, Lyon moved into the final again. In July 2018, she and the team took part in the Women's International Champions Cup , which was played for the first time , where Lyon was again the opponent in the semi-finals. This game was lost with 0: 3. The game for 3rd place could then be won 2-1 against Paris Saint-Germain . The 2018/19 UEFA Women's Champions League ended in the round of 32, where the home game was lost 2-0 after a 1-1 draw at Atlético Madrid .

National teams

Although she was born in the USA, she decided for the English national team and took part in qualifying for the U-19 European Championship in 2004 , for which England could not qualify. In 2005 she made her first senior international match against Northern Ireland in the Algarve Cup .

In 2009 she reached the final of the European Championship as a substitute goalkeeper with England without any use , in which England lost 6-2 to Germany . So far she has made 23 games for England. She is currently number one on the English team. In 2011 she was used in five out of six games, four of which England won, u. a. against the USA and most recently against Sweden .

She was nominated for the 2011 World Cup . In the first game against Mexico , she made a goalkeeping mistake that made it 1-1 for Mexico. Nevertheless, she was used in the other games and showed a good performance, especially in the quarter-finals against France. In the penalty shootout, she saved the first penalty, but was powerless with the others and since two English players missed, England was eliminated for the third time in the quarter-finals of a World Cup.

In 2012 she was part of Team GB that took part in the Olympic Games in London . She was used in all four games, but was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Canada after not conceding a goal in the group games.

Bardsley (No. 1) with the national team before the game against the USA on February 13, 2015

In 2015 she was part of the English squad for the World Cup in Canada. She was used in all seven games and was only substituted in the quarterfinals against Canada when she got a foreign body in the eye. With her team, she managed to win against Germany for the first time in the third place match. She was named “Player of the Game” both after the round of 16 against Norway and the game for third place.

In the subsequent qualification for the 2017 European Championship , she was used in five games and only conceded a goal in the 1-1 draw against Belgium . Since this was the only goal conceded and the only point loss in the qualification, the English women qualified as group winners for the EM. There she shared the job with Siobhan Chamberlain and both appeared in three games, with Bardsley not conceding a goal, but breaking his leg in the quarter-finals against France . Due to the 3-0 semi-final defeat against the hosts, the final was missed.

In qualifying for the 2019 World Cup , she only had two appearances, as she could only be nominated again in November 2017 due to her broken leg at the EM. It was used in the 5-0 win against Kazakhstan in November, but only again in the decisive game for group victory in August 2018, which was won 3-0 against Wales . In four games she only sat on the bench.

In March 2019 she won the SheBelieves Cup for the first time , but was only used in the 2-2 win against the USA . This was followed by a use in the 0-1 home defeat against Canada and on May 8, the nomination for the World Cup . At the World Cup, she was used in two group games as well as the second and quarter-finals and only had to accept a goal in the 2-1 win against Scotland . In the end, fourth place jumped out for her team.
