This article is about the English women's national soccer team at the 2019 women's soccer world cup in France . England took part in the finals for the fifth time. As in 2015, England reached the game for third place, but lost it this time.

qualification

Opponents in the qualification were Bosnia and Herzegovina , for the first time Kazakhstan , Russia and neighboring Wales . The group winners could qualify directly, the group runner-up would be qualified for the playoff games for another World Cup starting place if he were one of the four best runners-up in the group.

The English women started the qualification under national coach Mark Sampson , who had led the English women to 3rd place at the 2015 World Cup. After allegations from English players, he was dismissed by the English Football Association after the first qualifying game. Mo Marley took over the post on an interim basis . In January 2018, the former England international Phil Neville became the coach of the women's national team.

The English team started with four home games, met Russia in the first game and won 6-0. This was followed by victories against Bosnia and Herzegovina (4-0) and Kazakhstan (5-0) before the only point was lost in the goalless draw against Wales. The following away games were won and only conceded a goal at 1: 3 in Russia. Since the Welsh women hadn't lost a game before their home game against England, the game of the neighbors was decisive for the group victory. England prevailed 3-0 at Newport, with the three goals falling within 12 minutes between the 57th and 69th minutes. England qualified ahead of schedule and a few newcomers were used in the last game in the 6-0 win against Kazakhstan.

A total of 29 field players were used, 16 of whom were already in the squad for the 2017 European Championship. Only Lucy Bronze took part in all eight games. Toni Duggan came on seven missions, and captain Steph Houghton , Isobel Christiansen , Fran Kirby , Nikita Parris and Jodie Taylor had six missions each . Alex Greenwood had to take a forced break after receiving a yellow-red card in the game against Bosnia & Herzegovina. Four players were used in the goalkeeping position. With a total of 33 players, the English coaches used the most players of all qualified teams.

Most of the 29 goals for the English team were scored by Nikita Parris (6) and Toni Duggan (4). A total of 12 English players scored in the qualification. Three players (Melissa Lawley, Beth Mead (2) and Lucy Staniforth) scored their first international goals in qualifying. Four players ( Gabby George , Beth Mead , Lucy Staniforth and Leah Williamson ) made their first international appearances in qualifying. Steph Houghton played her 100th international match - five of them for Team GB - in a goalless draw against Wales on April 6, 2018.

For the World Cup group draw that took place on December 8, 2018, England was allocated Pot 1 based on its placement in the FIFA world rankings on December 7, 2018. The team was therefore unable to face world champions USA, Germany or hosts France in the group games. The English team was drawn as the group head of group D. Argentina, Japan and World Cup newcomer Scotland were drawn.

Scotland are one of the four second most frequent opponents of the English team with 25 games, with England alone against Scotland having a positive record. Against the three other teams (Germany, France and Sweden) the balance is negative. So far there have been 22 wins, one draw and two defeats. The last game was the first group game at the EM 2017, in which the Scottish women were also newcomers, and was won 6-0. There have been four games against Japan so far with one win, two draws and one defeat. The latter with an own goal by Laura Bassett in the second minute of stoppage time in the semi-finals of the last World Cup. At the previous World Cup, England won a group game against Japan, the only defeat for the Japanese on the way to the World Cup. There was a 4-1 defeat against Argentina in 1971 at the Mundial in Mexico , but this is not counted by the English association and FIFA. The only official game against the South Americans so far ended in the 2007 World Cup group game 6-1 for England.
