This article is about the Dutch women's national football team at the 2019 Women's World Cup in France . The Netherlands took part in the finals for the second time and for the first time as European champions. The Netherlands and Jamaica needed the most games (12) to qualify. With the second place after defeat in the final against defending champion USA, the Dutch women achieved their best World Cup placement and the greatest improvement in the all-time ranking of all participants by climbing from 19th to 12th place.

qualification

Opponents in the qualification were Ireland , Northern Ireland , Norway and Slovakia . The group winners could qualify directly, the group runner-up would be qualified for the playoff games for another World Cup starting place if he were one of the four best runners-up in the group.

The Dutch women, who won the European Championship for the first time in August 2017, started with a 1-0 win against their supposedly strongest rival Norway, with the goal not falling until the final minute. This was followed by a 5-0 win in Slovakia and a goalless draw against Ireland. They then won the next games against Northern Ireland 7-0, in Ireland 2-0, in Northern Ireland 5-0 and against Slovakia 1-0 with a goal in the final minute, but after the defeat the Norwegians in the Netherlands won all games, the last game in Norway was decisive for winning the group. A draw would have been enough for the Dutch women to be group winners. After six minutes of play it was already 0: 2 and since Vivianne Miedema could only score the next goal, the Norwegians pulled past and qualified directly for the World Cup finals. As the best runner-up in the group, however, the Dutch women reached the playoffs of the four best runners-up in the group. It came in the semifinals against Denmark for the European Championship final. But as in the European Championship final, the Dutch women were able to prevail and moved into the playoff final with two wins (2-0 and 2-1). Switzerland was the opponent here. In the home game, the Dutch women won 3-0 after a goalless first half, so that 1-1 in the second leg meant qualifying for the World Cup. The Dutch played 83 minutes outnumbered, as Anouk Dekker received the red card in the seventh minute after an emergency brake and is therefore banned from the first World Cup group game.

A total of 21 players were used, of which 18 were already in the squad for the 2017 European Championship. Of these, Dominique Bloodworth , Lieke Martens , Shanice van de Sanden and Sherida Spitse took part in all twelve games. As four years earlier, Vivianne Miedema (7) scored the most goals for the Dutch team . Sherida Spitse followed with 6, Lineth Beerensteyn with 5 (three of them in the playoffs) and Lieke Martens with 4 goals. A total of eight Dutch players scored 29 goals in qualifying, and they also benefited from an own goal by a Northern Irish woman, which fell 7-0 in the final minute.

In preparation for the World Cup, the Dutch played against World Cup newcomer South Africa on January 19, 2019 in Cape Town and won 2-1. It was Sherida Spitse by their 156th international match record national of the Netherlands. At the end of February / beginning of March, the team took part in the Algarve Cup 2019 , but could not defend the title from the previous year . After defeats against Spain (0: 2) and Poland (0: 1) it was only enough to play for 11th place against China , which was won 4: 2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Here made Lieke Martens her 100th international. The 11th place is the worst placement of a participating continental champion in the history of the Algarve Cup and the worst placement of a participating winner from last year. In April the Dutch won 2-0 against Mexico in Arnhem and then in Alkmaar 7-0 against World Cup newcomers Chile . On June 1st, Australia were the last opponent before the World Cup in Eindhoven and were defeated 3-0.

Venues for the Dutch team

For the World Cup group draw that took place on December 8, 2018, the Netherlands was allocated Pot 2 based on its position in the FIFA world rankings of December 7, 2018. The team could thus meet world champions USA, Germany or hosts France in the group games. Ultimately, the team was drawn into Group E, where, like at the last World Cup, they will meet Canada and New Zealand and for the first time Cameroon.

Against Canada, the record is negative in twelve games with three draws and nine defeats. At the last World Cup, the two separated 1: 1. The Dutch lost the last game between the two in April 2016 in Eindhoven with 1: 2. Against New Zealand, however, the record is positive with three wins, two draws (including one win on penalties) and defeats. At the last World Cup, the Dutch won their opening game against New Zealand 1-0 and the last game, three days before the last defeat against Canada, was won (2-0), which made the balance positive.

Knockout round

As group winners, the Dutch met Asian champions Japan, runners-up in Group D, in the last knockout round match. Both met in the round of 16 in 2015, where Japan won 2-1. Then there were three wins and one defeat for the Dutch women. In the last game at the Algarve Cup 2018 they won 6-2. With 2-1 through two goals from Lieke Martens , the Dutch women were able to return the favor for their defeat four years earlier. The winning goal fell in the final minute through a converted hand penalty. The winners of the quarter-finals were Italy, who had only three wins, five draws and seven defeats in 15 games - the last one in September 2005, followed by three wins and one draw. The European champions prevailed 2-0 against the southern Europeans and qualified for the Olympic Games for the first time . Opponents in the semi-finals were the Swedes, who were defeated 1-0 in extra time. In the final, the team lost to defending champions USA 2-0.
