This article covers the Italian national women's soccer team at the 2019 women's soccer world cup in France . Italy took part in the finals for the third time. The last time the Italians took part was in 1999.

qualification

Opponents in the qualification were Belgium , for the first time Moldova , Portugal and Romania . The group winners could qualify directly, the group runner-up would be qualified for the playoff games for another World Cup starting place if he were one of the four best runners-up in the group.

The qualification was the first task of the new national coach Milena Bertolini , who had taken over from Antonio Cabrini in August 2017 .

The Italian team started with a 5-0 home win over Moldova. This was followed by victories against Romania (1: 0 and 3: 0), in Portugal (1: 0) and Moldova (3: 1), before a clash with their fiercest rivals Belgium. With 2: 1 after 0: 1 deficit, a preliminary decision was made in the fight for the World Cup ticket. With a 3-0 win against Portugal on June 8, 2018, the Italians became the first European team to qualify for the World Cup finals. In the last game there was a 1: 2 defeat against Belgium, but since the Belgians had only achieved a 1: 1 in the home game against Portugal in April 2018, they were two points behind for the first time for a World Cup despite a better goal difference. A total of 26 players were used, 17 of whom were already in the squad for the 2017 European Championship. Only Barbara Bonansea and Cristiana Girelli took part in all eight games. Aurora Galli , goalkeeper Laura Giuliani and captain Sara Gama , who had taken over from the retired captain Melania Gabbiadini after the European Championship, made seven appearances .

Cristiana Girelli (7) scored the most goals for the Italian team . A total of eight Italian players scored 17 goals in qualifying, and they also benefited from the 1-0 win against Romania from the Romanian Andreea Corduneanu's own goal , who also received the yellow-red card in stoppage time , and the 3-1 win against Moldova from another own goal.

preparation

In preparation for the World Cup, the first test matches were held on October 9 in Cremona against Sweden (1-0) and on November 10 in Osnabrück against Germany (2: 5). In January 2019, the Italians won against World Cup newcomers Chile on the 18th in Empoli 2-1 and Wales on the 22nd in Cesena 2-0. At the end of February / beginning of March, the Italians took part in the Cyprus Cup for the tenth time . After victories against Mexico (5: 0), World Cup participants Thailand (4: 1) and Hungary (3: 0), the final was reached as in the previous year. Here they met North Korea , which could not qualify for the World Cup. In a turbulent game with two sent offs for the Asians, the score was 3: 3 after 120 minutes, so that it came to a penalty shoot-out in which the Italians lost 6-7. In April Italy did not test against other World Cup participants like most other World Cup participants, but on the 5th in Lublin against Poland (1: 1) and on the 9th in Reggio nell'Emilia against Ireland (2: 1). Squad

On April 30, a preliminary roster with 26 players was named. On May 24th, the roster was reduced to 23 players. Goalkeeper Francesca Durante and field players Greta Adami , Lisa Alborghetti and Valery Vigilucci were deleted . In addition there was Elena Linari , who was active in the Spanish league a few days before the nomination .

For the World Cup group draw that took place on December 8, 2018, Italy was allocated to Pot 3 based on its placement in the FIFA world rankings of December 7, 2018. The team could thus meet world champions USA, Germany or hosts France in the group games. Ultimately, the team was drawn into Group C with Australia, Brazil and World Cup newcomer Jamaica.

Against Australia, the record was positive in seven games before the World Cup with three wins and two draws (including a win on penalties) and defeats. The two have never met at world championships. The last game between the two was the game for 7th place in the Cyprus Cup 2014 , which Italy lost 5-2. Against Brazil, the record was negative with five defeats before the World Cup. So far, both have met in a World Cup game that was lost 2-0 in the first meeting in 1999. Italy had never played against Jamaica.

Italy fell behind early in the first game against Australia, but Barbara Bonansea was able to equalize after a defensive error by the Australians in the second half and still score the winning goal in stoppage time. They then won 5-0 against Jamika, with Cristiana Girelli scoring the first three goals and Aurora Galli the last two. They lost 1-0 against Brazil with a penalty shot by Marta, who was the record scorer in the World Cup , but this could be accepted to advance to the second round as group winners. Here they won 2-0 against China.
