The Cyprus Cup 2016 was the 9th edition of the women's football tournament for national teams , which has been held annually since 2008, and took place from March 2 to 9, 2016, as before, at various venues in the Republic of Cyprus . In contrast to the previous events, the tournament has a number of special features. For the first time it was organized by the Finnish association alone, before the English, Dutch and Scottish associations were also among the organizers. With England and Canada, the two record winners did not take part. While England took part in the SheBelieves Cup 2016 , which was taking place at the same time , the Canadians took part in the Algarve Cup 2016 , which was again taking place in parallel . France, penultimate and two-time winner, also took part in the SheBelieves Cup instead. So none of the previously victorious teams took part. The Dutch women, previously co-organizer and finalist in 2011, also did not take part due to the qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games taking place at the same time . With New Zealand, which took part in the Algarve Cup for the first time, the last of the previous finalists from the group of senior national teams was also missing. The top participant in the FIFA world rankings was Italy, who finished 13th there. The Italians were also the only participant who could place in the top four teams. For the first time, no non-European team took part and none of the participants took part in the 2015 World Cup or could qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Again, the team of the host country did not take part, instead they took part in the Aphrodite Cup , which began one day after the Cyprus Cup and is also taking place in Cyprus.

The venues were the GSZ Stadium in Larnaka , the Anagennisi Stadium in Famagusta and the Tasos Markou in Paralimni .

Regulations

Eight - instead of the last twelve - national teams took part in the tournament. The eight formed two groups. First, the teams in their group played each against each other for the placement. First the best number of points, then the direct comparison and only then the goal difference was decisive for the placement. Then the group winners played for the tournament victory, the second-placed for third place, the third-placed for fifth and the fourth-placed for seventh place.

Since FIFA classifies the games as " friendly games" , each team was allowed to make six substitutions per game. Yellow cards received during the tournament had no accumulating effect. After a yellow-red or red card , a player would have been automatically banned from the next game.
