Approach to Larnaka |
Larnaka , also Larnaca , Greek Λάρνακα Lárnaka , outdated Λάρναξ Lárnax , Turkish Larnaka , is a port city in the southeast of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus with 51,468 inhabitants and the capital of the district of the same name .
history
The city-kingdom of Kition was one of the most important ancient city-kingdoms. Building remains reach into the 13th century BC. BC back. The capital was Kition in what is now Larnaka. Phoenicians later founded a powerful kingdom here.
In the scale there was a temple of Melkart ( Ešmun ), venerated in Roman times as Aesculapia or Hercules , and Artemis Paralia . An inscription from this temple was brought to New York by Luigi Palma di Cesnola . It is:
"[... in the year (?) ... of King Pumiathon (?)], King of Kition and [I] dalion , son of [Mil] kyaton, King of Kition and [Ida] lion: These are the two offerings, d [ie] 'Abd-Eli [m], [son of]' Abd-Melqart, son of ['Abd-Re] schef [offered and raised] for his master [...]. "
In the 18th century Larnaka became a trading center and seat of European consulates. The port city's importance increased after 1974 when the port of Kyrenia and Nicosia Airport were closed due to the Turkish invasion .
Excavation history
The remains of sanctuaries and Cyclops walls of the ancient city have been uncovered by archaeologists since the 19th century , initially quite haphazardly. The Kition stele is an important find . It is now in the Vorderasiatisches Museum Berlin .
