Excavations

In the sea off Mazotos, a shipwreck from the late classical period (fourth century BC) was uncovered in various excavation steps . It is the largest ship ever found off the coast of Cyprus and the first underwater object to be uncovered under the sole control of Cyprus. The project began in November 2007 with the first preliminary investigations.

The merchant ship was with wine amphora from Chios and other islands of the Aegean loaded and is about 40 to 45 meters depth. The finds were brought to the museum in Larnaka and are being kept there.

Excavations 2018

In the 2018 season, in which 43 researchers, divers and volunteers from eight different countries (including Germany) were involved, the bow area of the ship was examined further. Among other things, 70 new amphorae were uncovered, increasing the number of containers discovered so far in the forward deck of the ship's hold to 99. In addition to amphorae filled with wine, at least one was filled with olives that may have been intended for the occupation of the crew. Two fishing weights were also found on board.

Furthermore, the shipbuilding technology was investigated and ligatures as well as mortar and tenons were discovered, which connected the ship parts. These finds, which go back to the traditions of the Greeks and Phoenicians , represent an important step in the study of shipbuilding in the eastern Mediterranean during the classical period, especially since only two other wrecks are known from this period.
