The A1 motorway is a motorway in the Republic of Cyprus . It forms a connection between the capital Nicosia and the port city of Limassol in the south of the country. The highway has a length of 73 kilometers.

Street description

The motorway begins in the south of the capital Nicosia, which has around 270,000 inhabitants, on the main road B1 . The road is four lanes and runs south through the southern suburbs of Nicosia. South of Nicosia, the A2 is crossed, which leads towards Larnaka. The motorway then reaches the south coast of Cyprus, where the A5 is crossed which also leads to Larnaka . The A1 then turns west and runs parallel to the coast towards Limassol. It then forms the bypass of the city of Limassol with 228,000 inhabitants. In the west of the city the A1 ends in the A6 , which continues to Paphos .

history

The motorway was opened to traffic in October 1984. It was the first motorway in Cyprus and the start of an ambitious project by the Cypriot government to connect all major cities in Cyprus via the motorway.

The Cypriot government intends to widen the A1 to six lanes between Nicosia and the junction with the A2 motorway.
