Kofinou ( Greek Κοφίνου , Turkish Köfünye or Geçitkale ) is a place in the Larnaka district in Cyprus . In 2011 the place had 1,312 inhabitants.
location
Kofinou is located in the south of Cyprus at an altitude of about 150 meters, 39 km south of the capital Nicosia and 24 km west of Larnaka . Communities in the area are Skarinou , Menogeia , Alaminos and Agios Theodoros .
history
Until 1974 the place was mainly inhabited by Cypriot Turks , the few Greek inhabitants had left the village at the end of the 1950s. The population of the village increased after 1964 when about 60 Turkish Cypriot families from Pano Lefkara gave up the Greek Cypriot dominated village. Kofinou also gained international fame after Turkish Cypriot militiamen blocked the main road with obstacles. As a result, the National Guard under Georgios Grivas and the Cypriot Turks clashed in November 1967 , killing 23 Turkish Cypriots and one Greek Cypriot. A Turkish ultimatum and the stationing of Turkish troops on the Greek-Turkish border led to the withdrawal of the national guard from Kofinou and the neighboring town of Agios Theodoros, whereby Grivas left Cyprus.
After the invasion of Turkish troops in 1974, many of the residents settled in Geçitkale in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus .
traffic
The place is located near two important hubs of the Cypriot transport network. The A5 begins on the A1 not far north of the village, which provides a direct motorway connection to the most important cities on the island. In the village itself, the main road B5 meets the B1 .
