Cypriot Turks ( Turkish Kıbrıs Türkleri ) are a regional group of the Turkish ethnic group who live on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus . Today they mostly live in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus , where they make up the largest part of the population.

The number of Cypriot Turks is estimated at 1,250,000: 500,000 in Turkey , 300,000 in the United Kingdom , about 314,000 in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus , 120,000 in Australia , 10,000 in North America , 2,000 in the Republic of Cyprus , 2,000 in Germany and another 6,000 in other countries.

Language and religion

About 99% of the Cypriot Turks belong to Sunni Islam . There is also a small Alevi minority. The Cypriot Turks use a dialect of Turkish as their language .

Diaspora

From 1955 many Cypriot Turks left the island for economic and political reasons; their immigration destinations were Turkey , Great Britain and Australia . Due to the isolation and trade embargoes against the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus , emigration did not stop. The exact number of Cypriot Turks living outside the island is not known, but there are more Cypriot Turks living abroad than on Cyprus itself.

designation

Occasionally, the Cypriot Turks used to be called Cypriots , while the Cypriot Greeks were called Cypriots . In the meantime, the term Cypriot is common for both ethnic groups. None of these terms contain a derogatory nuance.
