Pano Lefkara ( Greek Πάνω Λεύκαρα , often Lefkara ) is a mountainous area in the district of Larnaca in Cyprus . In 2011 it had 762 inhabitants. Pano Lefkara has been a member of the European Charter - Villages of Europe , a group of rural communities from all 28 EU countries, since 2004 .

The place is about 35 km south of the capital Nicosia and 29 km west of Larnaka in the south-eastern foothills of the Troodos Mountains at an altitude of up to 600 meters. Places in the vicinity include the lower-lying neighboring village Kato Lefkara , Kato Drys , Vavla and Vavatsinia .

Attractions

The place is known for its silver craft , which has been practiced since the Venetian period . Visitors can find out more about it in various silversmiths and in a folklore museum.

The place has a further supraregional fame also abroad through its knitting and lace, which are known as Lefkaritiko . This tradition goes back to the years between 1191 and 1571, when Venetian aristocratic ladies spent their time in the village making embroidery and teaching it to local servants. Leonardo da Vinci is said to have visited the place on a trip to Cyprus and acquired a tablecloth made here, which he is said to have donated to the Milan Cathedral . The Lefkaritiko were added to the UNESCO list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2010 .

Timiou Stavrou Church

The church Timiou Stavrou (or Holy Cross Church ) from the 13th century is also striking . The church has frescoes from 1760. A wooden, silver-plated cross is kept in the crypt , which is said to contain a piece of the real cross of Jesus.
