Nieuwerkerk ( Zeeland Nieuwerkaarke ) is a village in the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland in the Dutch province of Zeeland with 2645 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2018).
geography
The village is located on the former island of Duiveland in the southwest of the Netherlands. Northwest of the town center is the Steenzwaan natural landscape , which is under the administration of Staatsbosbeheer . Until the river Gouwe, which separated the island of Schouwen and Duiveland, silted up and was polded, Steenzwaan was an arm of this river.
politics
By the time Nieuwerkerk was merged with Oosterland and Ouwerkerk to form the new municipality of Duiveland in 1961 , it had formed an independent municipality . Since the merger on January 1, 1997, the village has belonged to the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland.

Monuments
In Nieuwerkerk, eight buildings are listed as Rijksmonumenten . These include the following monuments:
- The Johanneskerk in the center of the village, consecrated to the Evangelist Johannes , was built in the 15th century in late Gothic style and is surrounded by a ring road typical of Schouwen-Duiveland. In 2004 it was incorporated into the Protestantse Kerk in Nederland (PKN).
- The stone flour mill from 1884 survived the flood disaster of 1953 , unlike most of the houses in Nieuwerkerk.
