Location of Zonnemaire in the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland |
Zonnemaire ( Zeeland Sunnemere ) is a village in the northeast of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland in the Dutch province of Zeeland .
The name goes back to Sonnemare , the water between the former islands of Bommenede and Schouwen . Until it was incorporated into Brouwershaven in 1961, the village was an independent municipality.
Zonnemaire is the birthplace of Pieter Zeeman , who together with Hendrik Lorentz received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1902 for the discovery of the Zeeman effect named after him . A bust was erected in Zonnemaire in his honor; a gift from the city of Amsterdam , where Zeeman taught and died. In addition, a street is named after him.
