Ellemeet is a village with 360 inhabitants, which today belongs to the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland and is located on the island of the same name in the Dutch province of Zeeland .

History and culture

Ellemeet probably originated in the 12th century under the name Ellemid . This name originated from the first name Eli / Ella and the word Med / mede, which means something like pastureland . Ellemeet has not had a church since 1575, as it was destroyed during the siege of Zierikzee in the Eighty Years War and was not rebuilt.

The community became known nationwide in August 1925 when a meteorite , which is believed to have originated from the asteroid Vesta , struck not far from the town. Ellemeet was particularly hard hit by the flood disaster of 1953 , as most of the municipality is only very slightly above and in many places even below sea level. Until January 1, 1961, Ellemeet was an independent municipality, but then it was part of the Middenschouwen municipality , which in turn became part of the Schouwen-Duiveland municipality on January 1, 1997 .

The old grain mill ' t Hert (also called Oostermolen ), which stands outside the village and was built in 1748, is well worth seeing . It owes its name to its weather vane in the shape of a deer (Dutch: Hert). It can be viewed by appointment or while it is being milled.

Traditionally in Ellemeet, as in the neighboring towns of Burgh-Haamstede , Noordwelle , Scharendijke , Serooskerke and Renesse , the Straô takes place every year from mid-February to early March . At this festival, the horses run to the beach for the first time after winter so that they can wash off the "evil spirits", which according to ancient pagan beliefs have lodged in the horse's legs, through the salt water.

Demographics

Ellemeet has a population density of 58 inhabitants per km² . A good 8% of the population is between 15 and 25 years old, while around 20% are already over 65 years old.

Economy and Transport

The town center is mainly characterized by residential buildings. There is also a gas station, a car dealer and a café / restaurant called Eetcafe ´t Ellemeetje . In addition, due to the high number of tourists in the area, there are many bungalow parks and campsites . Outside, however, the area is still characterized by agricultural land and farms .

From Ellemeet there is a direct connection to the N57 in the direction of Brielle / Hellevoetsluis and in the direction of Middelburg . You can also use Provinciale Weg 652 (N652) in the direction of Burgh-Haamstede .

Furthermore, the place is served by some bus lines, with which connections to the nearby cities such as Ouddorp and Zierikzee are given. There is also a continuous connection to Spijkenisse , a suburb of Rotterdam .
