Renesse is a Dutch seaside resort on the North Sea coast with 1,520 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). It is located on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland in the province of Zeeland and politically belongs to the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland. The cities of Zierikzee , Bruinisse , Middelburg , Veere and Scharendijke are also close to Renesse .

tourism

Renesse is a popular holiday and excursion destination. The place has a large number of campsites, guest houses, bungalow parks and hotels that are well attended all year round, but especially in the summer months. The number of German tourists has risen continuously in recent years, especially from the Rhineland and the Ruhr area , many visitors find their way to the otherwise rather tranquil Renesse. The extensive area can be easily explored by bike or on foot.

Until 2010, the place was visited by young tourists - mainly German - who turned night into day in the streets of Renesse at Whitsun. Despite strict bans and corresponding penalties, the camp was wildly camped because the accommodation was insufficient to provide accommodation for the masses. Since 2011 there have been no more events in the center of Renesse on the Whitsun weekend.

Along the beach there are several beach pavilions where food and drinks as well as beach accessories are offered. There are also paid parking spaces directly at the dunes . In the village itself there is a tennis and mini golf course , bike rental, shopping facilities and a wide range of restaurants including various discos .

history

Renesse was first mentioned in 1267. The name of the place probably comes from the terms Rietnisse (flat land overgrown with reeds) or Reenisse (flat land crossed by ditches). The place is laid out as a ring village around the Jakobuskirche in the center of the village. At that time there were only a few direct routes through the dunes to the beach, the most important of which was the so-called Laóne , which ran along the place where an iron lighthouse was built in 1856. The lighthouse was demolished again in 1910, whereby the former home of the lighthouse keeper, the Zeerust , still serves as a cozy restaurant and popular excursion destination.

Attractions

The historic Moermond Castle is located on the eastern edge of the village next to the Jakobuskirche , which can be seen from a distance . This could be viewed before the restoration, but is now owned by a private foundation and is no longer open to the public.

Transferium

There is a large car park for up to 900 vehicles near the town center. Buses and horse-drawn carriages, which belong to the so-called Transferium , start from here . Parking in the parking lot is free, in summer the place is guarded. The Transferium uses various routes that lead past hotels, campsites and dune crossings. There is also the Strandexpress , which is not only equipped with a lift for wheelchairs, but also goes directly to the dune crossings. In the evenings and at night there is also the Nightexpress , which creates a connection between the campsites and the center of Renesse. The Nightexpress is chargeable, while all other journeys are free.
