Sint Jacobus (also called Jacobuskerk ) is an Evangelical Reformed church in the Dutch town of Renesse on Schouwen-Duiveland , province of Zeeland . The Jakobuskirche is consecrated to Jacobus maior .

Like the Corneliuskerk in Noordwelle, the Jacobuskerk belongs to the Reformed parish Renesse / Noordwelle within the Protestant Church in the Netherlands . The church tower is owned by the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland.

history

There was probably a chapel in the same place as the Church of St. Jacobus . This presumably already existed in the 13th century, as a certain Jan van Renesse is said to have been buried there in 1207.

The free-standing bell tower was then probably built in the 15th century . The church bell itself was cast by Pieter van Dormen in 1458 .

The current Gothic church was built at the beginning of the 16th century, with the nave starting in 1506. A planned choir , the beginnings of which are still visible, was no longer implemented as a result of the Reformation .

The choir of the old Romanesque chapel has meanwhile been used as a school room. In the 19th century, one room was added. In 1916 the old building was demolished and replaced by a three-room new building. In 1977 and 1978, the old choir room was reconstructed after the school had its own building.

In 1938 the church got the organ built in 1882 for the German congregation in Rotterdam by the Windesheim company Oberlinger , which came to the congregation on adventurous routes. The organ was restored from 1985 to 1986.

Around 1952 the church was renovated and provided with new windows. In 1953, the pulpit of the Elkerzee church, which was devastated by the storm surge of the same year and not rebuilt, was taken over. A basin for collecting rainwater, which can be found on the north side of the church, used to be used as a water supply in times of drought, during which the residents could help themselves for two cents per bucket. The pool was renovated in 1978. The fire brigade's syringe house was once located on the west side. To the left of the entrance was de preson , a prison intended for short-term custody, which was popularly known as boevenkotje (»crooks stable «).

Architecture and equipment

The ceiling of the church consists of a wooden barrel vault .

In the church there are tombstones for the pastor and doctor C. Tessing († 1684) and the mayor and dike count Adrian Tromp († 1754) with his wife († 1730), those of Marinus Hoogenboom and his wife Tona Theresia Vis, as well as the gallery opposite the organ, a memorial stone to Cornelis Toonissen Huighesen and his wife Durrecken (1510) as well as Evert Hendriksen and Stoffel van Buven. The memorial plaques on the walls for u. a. Nicolaas van Hoorn , the mayor of Vlissingen and Mr. von Burgh and his wife Johanna Ockersse, were hidden during the French occupation and thus saved.

At the pulpit one is Kanzeluhr attached.

organ

The organ was built in 1882 by the organ building company Gebr. Oberlinger (Windesheim) for the German Evangelical Congregation in Rotterdam . In 1938 the instrument was installed in the Jakobuskirche. The slider chest instrument has 20 stops on two manuals and pedal. The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
