Rutger Bregman (born April 26, 1988 in Renesse ) is a Dutch author , activist and historian .

Life

Bregman studied history at the University of Utrecht and the University of California, Los Angeles . Bregman's articles have appeared in the Washington Post , the BBC and various Dutch media. He was nominated twice for the European Press Prize .

Bregman is the author of several non-fiction books on unconditional basic income . His work Gratis geld voor iedereen , published in 2014, became a bestseller that has been translated into over 30 languages ​​and was published in German in 2017 under the title Utopien für Realisten . His main job is as a journalist in the progress department for the Dutch news platform De Correspondent . Together with Jesse Frederik, the correspondent for business, Bregman has also been recording the De Rudi & Freddie Show podcast since May 2016 .

In his books, Bregman calls for open borders, a 15-hour week and a new distribution of human labor. He also speaks out in favor of the feasibility and implementation of future plans.

At the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2019, he caused a sensation when he called for “fair taxation for the rich” and an end to tax avoidance . A video excerpt from his speech reached 8 million views in a short time. In it he complains that philanthropy is pretended to be a suitable substitute for a welfare state financed by fair taxation .

In an interview with t3n in the summer of 2020, he spoke out in favor of a change in how things work in the workplace.

Trivia

In an interview with Tucker Carlson in February 2019, he accused the Fox moderators of hiding the topic of tax evasion and that Carlson was a millionaire paid by billionaires like Rupert Murdoch and the Koch brothers . Carlson was then verbally abusive towards Bregman, the corresponding segment was not broadcast by Fox.
