Brielle ( listen ? / I ) (or called Den Briel ) is a Dutch city and municipality in the province of South Holland . Audio file / audio sample

history

On April 1st, 1572, Den Briel was the first city ever to be conquered by Dutch freedom fighters during the Eighty Years War . It was an advantage for the Geuzen that the city was relatively weakly occupied at that time. While people asked for admission in front of the north gate, a second division was able to enter through the south gate unmolested. After the original plan to loot the city and then set it on fire, it was finally decided to preserve the place. Every year on April 1st the liberation of Brielle is celebrated. The “April 1st Association” maintains the tradition. Brielle residents play the game "For the key to the city" in historical costumes. The conquest of the city by the Geusen is depicted at the port at the entrance to the Brielse Maas.

The celebrations of the century are national celebrations with royal participation. An enormous amount of effort was made, especially for the celebration of 1872. The celebration in 1922 also went beyond the usual scope. The central theme of the celebrations of the century is the fact that Brielle was the first city to be liberated by the Watergeuzen . The Latin coat of arms saying Libertatis Primitiae (German: Erstlinge der Freiheit = those first liberated) indicates this. This event played an important role in the creation of the Dutch state and in the history of the Princely House of Orange .

On July 9, 1572, the 19 martyrs of Gorkum died in Brielle .

Attractions

  • The St. Catharijnekerk was planned as the largest church in the Netherlands. Construction began in 1417, but due to the great fire in 1456 and lack of money, the church was never completed. Today it is the home of the Protestant Church in the Netherlands .
  • Sint Jacobskerk , late Gothic church from the 15th century. Originally the chapel of the St. Jakob Hospital.
