Location and economy

Katwijk beach

Katwijk is located at the former confluence of the Oude Rijn with the North Sea , about five kilometers west of Leiden . The place is a popular seaside resort with a wide sandy beach, which makes tourism one of the main sources of income for the municipality.

Prince Hendrik Canal
On February 3, 1598, this twenty meter long whale stranded on the coast between Scheveningen and Katwijk.

Katwijk has a deep sea fishing fleet and some fish processing companies. The headquarters of the fishing group Parlevliet & Van der Plas is located in the Valkenburg district . The place originally consists of two cores, the old Katwijk aan den Rijn with the harbor, and Katwijk aan Zee, located directly on the beach. However, both districts grew closer and closer together after the Second World War , so that the place now presents itself with a closed development. The center of today's Katwijk is in the district aan Zee , as the infrastructure that is important for tourists has developed there.

history

At the point where Katwijk is that you want Germanic tribe of the chat or Catten lived. The Roman fort and port Lugdunum Batavorum (Brittenburg) on the Oude Rijn was between Katwijk aan Zee and Noordwijk aan Zee and is listed in the Roman Tabula Peutingeriana . Occasional coin finds from Roman times have also been found in Katwijk. Archaeological finds from today's Katwijk are exhibited in the Museum of Antiquity ( Rijksmuseum van Oudheden ) in Leiden. The mouth of the Rhine was already silting up in Roman times. When the formation of dunes rapidly advanced in the 11th century , Katwijk was no longer a port. The Oude Rijn remained a shipping route. Today the Oude Rijn is separated from the open sea by a dam, so that ships and boats from the harbor can only reach the open sea via detours.

Until the 19th century, the place remained a poor fishing village with a fairly Orthodox population in church terms. The latter is still partly the case. The merger of the Dutch Reformed Church in 2004 led to a split in the church in Katwijk and religious insecurity for many devout Christians.

Around 1900 Katwijk became the target of numerous Impressionist and other painters, including Max Liebermann and Jan Toorop . His daughter Charley Toorop was born in Katwijk.

Katwijk suffered considerably during World War II from the German occupiers, who tore down parts of the old town center for the construction of the Atlantic Wall . These vacant lots were closed in the 1950s with modern buildings that give the district aan Zee a modern cityscape. However, the cozy atmosphere of the old fishing village was lost.

Katwijk is the largest city in the Netherlands with no trams or rail links (public transport). At Valkenburgersee there is a steam train, near a steam train museum.

Katwijk artists' colony

Bernard Blommers: Fisherman's Life on the Beach with Bomschuijt.

The first known painting of Katwijk from the 1st Golden Age of Dutch painting was made by the Haarlem painter Jacob van Ruisdael , its title is: View of the Tower of Katwijk . This proves that Katwijk has been a popular motif in landscape painting since that time.

It has a permanent exhibition on old life around the fishing village of Katwijk aan Zee - this part may be considered a local museum. In addition, there are annually changing art exhibitions, following on from the tradition of art lived there around the movement of Impressionism. The themes chosen are directly related to Impressionism and the artists who were active around Katwijk aan Zee or who flocked to the surrounding area - one of the main themes was the life of fishermen and their families and their famous ships, the Bomschuits . There are names like Adolph Artz, Bernard Blommers, Hans von Bartels , Eugéne Dücker , Wilhelm Hambüchen , Thomas Bush Hardy, Jozef Israëls , Hendrik Willebrord Jansen, Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek , Max Liebermann . German Grobe , also a painter from the Düsseldorf School of Painting, oriented himself heavily on Liebermann's work, so that he was nicknamed "Düsseldorfer Liebermann". Grobe spent almost 50 consecutive summers in Katwijk painting there and created an extensive body of work. Furthermore, in January Toorop and January Hillebrand Wijsmuller to name.
