Dirk Kuyt ( Anglicized by Kuijt ; born July 22, 1980 in Katwijk , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch football player . For the Dutch national team who played striker 104 international matches, most recently as a full-back .

Early life

Dirk Kuyt was born as the third of four children in the seaside resort Katwijk aan Zee in the municipality of Katwijk in South Holland . His father Gerrit, who died in 2007 of throat cancer , was a fisherman . If Kuyt hadn't become a soccer player, he would have followed the same career path as his father. He started playing football at the age of five with the Quick Boys Katwijk , where he went through all age groups. In 1998, at the age of 18, he was promoted to the first team and made a few appearances in the Hoofdklasse , at that time the top division in Dutch amateur football. There he convinced with his performances and caught the attention of the first division club FC Utrecht , who then signed him.

Career

Kuyt began his professional career in 1998 with FC Utrecht , for whom he scored 51 goals in 160 Eredivisie games up to 2003 and won the Dutch Cup in 2003. In 2003 he moved to Feyenoord Rotterdam , where he scored 71 goals in 101 games. In the 2004/05 season he was the top scorer in the Dutch league with 29 goals, but only finished fourth in the honor division with Feyenoord. Kuyt extended his contract with Feyenoord until 2009 and reached third place in the league with his club the following season.

On August 18, 2006, his previous club and Liverpool agreed on a transfer fee of 18 million euros for the striker. This makes it the most expensive sale in Feyenoord's history. At his new employer, Kuyt was a constant and played in his first season 34 games in the Premier League , in which he scored twelve goals. He also reached the final of the Champions League with Liverpool , which his team lost to AC Milan. Kuyt scored with the ultimately meaningless connection goal to 1: 2 in the 89th minute of the game, his first CL goal.

In the following season he played after the commitment of the Spaniard Fernando Torres increasingly as a right winger and came to significantly fewer goals. In the Premier League, he only scored three times, including two penalties in the Merseyside Derby against Everton . He was more successful in the Champions League , scoring five times in eleven games, including in the round of 16 against Inter Milan , in the quarter-finals against Arsenal and in the semi-finals against Chelsea . However, he could not repeat the final from last year with Liverpool, as they failed in the semi-finals at Chelsea.

During the summer break of 2012, Kuyt moved to Fenerbahçe Istanbul . He signed a three-year contract. With the end of his contract with Fenerbahçe, he moved to his former club Feyenoord Rotterdam in summer 2015 . He ended his career after the 2016/17 season.

National team

Kuyt made his debut in the Dutch national team on September 3, 2004 against Liechtenstein (3-0) as a substitute . He quickly became a fixture and played eleven of the twelve qualifying games for the Elftal during qualifying for the 2006 World Cup .

With the Netherlands he finally took part in the 2006 World Cup in Germany and was eliminated in the second round after a defeat against Portugal . Kuyt was used in three games, but remained without a goal.

Also in the 2008 European Cup he was part of the squad of the Oranje . Here he was used in all four games and scored one goal in a 4-1 victory over runner-up world champions France . However, the Netherlands were eliminated in the quarterfinals against Russia .

At the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa , he was also in the Dutch starting line-up. After three wins in the group stage, the Netherlands were also able to beat Slovakia , Brazil and Uruguay . The team only failed in the final against the Spanish team .

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he was nominated again for the Dutch squad. Kuyt acted in the new 5-3-2 system of bond coach Louis van Gaal as a full-back and played his 100th international match in the round of 16 against Mexico (2-1) .

At the beginning of October 2014, Kuyt announced his retirement from the national team after 104 international matches and 24 goals.

Kuyt's role model in football is Ruud Gullit . He has been married since 2003 and has four children (three sons, one daughter) with his wife Gertrude, a former nurse .
